Googe search results varies between IE and Firefox

Okay! I just stumbled upon this weird search problem. When not signed into google on either browser. Searching for the same exact keyword phrase my site comes up number 3 on the first page of google in mozilla and shows up on the 6th page at the 10th spot on IE.

I have recently been targeting this same keyphrase really hard and so thats why I have been monitoring my search placement so hard.

Based upon my recent backlink building project I would say that the Firefox results seem more realistic. But I won't take that as fact until I get some feedback on this.

Question?

Why, with both browsers (IE and Firefox) set to google.com for the homepage, but not signed into google on either browser (so that I don't get preference or suggested results based on my search history) would I get two VERY different search results?

I have never noticed this before, but it may be something everyone else already knew about and I have somehow always overlooked it. Any input?

  • I use Rank Checker by seo book and run it every morning while my coffee is brewing.

I would hate to go in and manually check rankings.

I don't know why their displaying different ranking based off your browser though.

    • I have seen this happen also, no explanation though.

Doesn't make sense any way you look at it.

Did you try different computers and ask others to test it?

  • Ya! Its the weirdest dang thing I've ever seen. Have you tried it for yourself to see what I'm talking about?
  • I'd bet that somehow IE is holding on to something or it's an IE thing. On any given day I would trust FireFox over IE for sure. Might even be going to different datacenters, or some other issue.

I rarely look at my rankings, just the sales or/and traffic =8~). It will drive you crazy looking at rankings everyday, especially if you have a lot of websites.

If you really want to screw up your day, do a remote to another computer in different time zone (I use parents and friends that live in other parts of the country when I really want to start digging) and seach the different datacenters. They can all be different.
  • Thanks for the reply! I agree! It will drive you mad. One more thing I forgot to mention is that I also have google instant turned off on both browsers. And I also notice that I get completely different results when signed in. My site isn't on the first page of google in Firefox when signed in, but I'm at #4 on the first page when I am signed out. Its crazy.
  • Me and many other users faced such problem yet. I have faced it even when i didn't log in to my Gmail. This problem is for Opera and Firefox too. But it seems that Firefox results are more accurate and more stable. I myself use Firefox when i want to check the position of a website for a keyword.
