I get most of my buying traffic from Yahoo right now, and have noticed something interesting. I know that everybody strives to be #1 in the rankings, and here's why.

My domain name is targeted to the exact keywords, and the title was also. When I changed the title, I dropped to #2 in Yahoo. Before, I was getting 1 - 2 sales per day. When I drop to the #2 site, I get a big fat 0. I think I lose about 30 - 40 visitors per day too. When I change the title back and raise to #1 again, I get my sales and visitors back.

Just something to test out in your sites. Yahoo puts a lot of weight in the title, so do some testing and see if you can increase even one or two positions... I could mean the difference between actually earning your first $ or having another site that just sits there doing nothing.


Also, on the SEO side. When I set a description for my site it magically started showing in Google. Without it, I never showed up. Don't forget the simple stuff. Keywords, Description, and Title are still as important as ever.

  • That's an interesting analysis. Are you using keyword insertion for your titles in Yahoo or simply putting making an ad for every keyword in your ad group?

    Also, you're right, people tend to forget about the basics of SEO which is still the essentials that will make your page rank accordingly.

    • To put it simply. When someone types in an exact phrase if it matches your title then it will always show up above a site that has the same ranking as yours and on many occasions above sites with a higher ranking than yours depending on the amount of competition within that particular string of keywords.

      This fact can be illustrated by people who use targeted or exact keywords in their blog posts as their name and/or title. The title of a page gets more weight in the search engines, and if I am understanding you right, where your ad gets placed in the PPCs as well.

      Glad you pointed this out, as Bishop said the many complicated strategies of SEO sometimes cause one to stray from the basics which still work like a charm.

      That is interesting, but I wouldn't attribute the main difference in your sales to the ad SERP position alone. Your page title becomes the headline for your natural listing in the search engines. Even small changes in your headline can make a big difference not only in how many people click through but on which people click through and for what reason.

      In contextual advertising your headline is well known to be the most important factor both in CTR and conversion rate when creating ad text. Your natural search listings essentially perform the same task as a contextual ad, with your page title as the headline and your meta description as the body of the ad.
