How can a page with no copy rank high?

Hey. I am the owner of a new social network Bongal: The Interests Network.

I am trying to get my inner pages ranking against keywords as I have always been advised that the page you are trying to rank needs 200 words of copy, keyword rich etc......

I have however a question for you all. If you google the work "friend finder" it comes back with the top result as FriendFinder - Have fun, meet people, & find love.. and result 2 as Facebooks find friends tool. Neither of these pages have any copy, just images and the odd link here and there.

Does this say that you dont need copy on the page to get it ranking?

    Let's see.

    1. Use of a keyword not likely to be used normally in a sentence in that order.
    2. Keyword is exact name of site, that has to have a bit of weight.
    3. Title of page starts using that keyword (a search reveals few sites having them in their titles).
    4. Well-known site, been around for a while could give more weight.
    5. Likely thousands of inbound links from other sites promoting it.

Has nothing to do with content. It's doing exactly as advertised.
      It has google authority.

What else would you want a page like this to show?

Ever been to eharmony? okcupid? Shoot, even craigslist?

How about ebay? Ever see facebook.com? Google.com?
      Twitter.com?

What kind of content would you like the page to show?

I know I may get slammed for this, but....
why on earth would you even try and come up with yet another?
And expect it to be so easy?

Paul I dont understand what u mean? All i am saying is, if you read the books they tell you that on page content should include 200 words or so with the keyword within them. This site deems to break this rule. Even more pertinent if you google "social network". The 4th result in the UK is The Social Network - Official Site however there is no words on the page at all.

Normally, I would agree. You need content. But there's always the odd site that breaks the rules. The reasons I've mentioned before. There's something about the site that outweighs everything else, likely all those links to it.

In this niche, google does not rank by content.
      There is no content!

      It's a dating/friend service!

Repeat: what kind of content do you want a dating/friend search site
      to show?

Their database does not get indexed. You need to go there and search.

What kind of content do you expect it to show?

Every single dating site has the same thing:
A search parameter form, followed by sexy pictures of people you
      are sure to meet!

      What more do you want?

You are mixing up finding friends/dating sites with
how-to sites. Not one and the same.

Paul - So for our site - Bongal: The Interests Network which is an online community site where members come to meet each other and chat about their hobbies etc (a little like meetup.com) would you suggest we could get our homepage ranking? We were going to just try to get the groups ranking as they contain content. Sorry if I am asking stupid questions here.
