Does Google give value to social bookmarks?

I've read a lot of different opinions on this, and I'm curious what the consensus is from the Warrior Forum.

There's no question that Social Bookmarking can be a big part of a marketing campaign and can drive lots of traffic. But strictly speaking, in terms of off-site SEO, does Google give much value to social bookmark links?

    Hi Tim,

It certainly does add a little bit of value in terms of SEO, especially in keeping your backlinks diverse.

They used to hold much higher value, but Google is always changing it's algorithms... they are certainly a quick way to get indexed, and the very fact that Google crawls the social bookmarking sites with the frequency that they do shows that they must value it to some degree.

Just don't expect to get anywhere with ONLY social bookmarks!

    Cheers,
    Carney

Not from what I've seen, think about it, social bookmarking sites are basically sites with low amounts of content and 1000s of outgoing links. Pretty much like a directory.

I think you're probably right. The Search Engines do crawl the social bookmarking sites quite frequently.

I bet that multiple links to the same domain from one social bookmarking account are ignored/devalued, but it seems to me that links from real account holders must be valued somewhat.

There are some sites that tend to show up in the backlink checkers, but I haven't had tons of success with bookmarking lately.

Yes they do. A backlink is a backlink. What your asking is how much link juice is given from social bookmarking.

I cant give a value but imagine this:
If the "best" backlink is worth 100 points

    then

A social bookmark is probably 5 points
Article directory backlinks are probably 6, if it's EZA then maybe a 9
Directory backlinks probably 2, DMOZ 10

Thats how I look at a backlink individually.

Now if you have a link strategy then it's possible to raise the "points" of each link.
In theory a link wheel with an EZA in the middle might raise its "points" to 15.

    Best regards
    Michael

I can't vouch for the effectiveness of linkswheels so don't take my word on it but
    the theory says so.

Nobody really knows what value theyt are given. Just think of social bookmarks as a vote for your site. If you had 10,000 people social bookmark your page, 10,000 are in essence voting that there is something worthy there.

Social bookmarking has some value, but that value is increased in a big way when you build links to your social bookmarking profiles, etc

Google gives value to any quality website and if you get a backlink fro any quality websites including social bookmarking sites, article directories or any other kind of website, it can help you to rank higher in Google.

It adds a great SEO benefit for me. As long as you can use it virally and you are linking to quality pages you will see results.

The aim is to get your pages shared among many users. This is easy when your content is great!

It obviously has a huge direct-linking benefit, but when you do it properly (and ethically) Web 2.0 / social linking can be very effective.

If we speak strictly in SEO , most of the book marking sites are useless. They are either adding nofollow or using a java script redirect to your website. I found digg and mixx useful only in terms of traffic and attracting spiders. I do not think they are transferring any link juice.

Note: I do bookmarking for my web pages which seems nice to share. It is for traffic .

They still work for my micro niche sites, but only in bulk (200+). If your niche has serious competition then you're wasting your time.

I looked this topic up because I recently submitted to about 120 of the existing social bookmark sites. Its been about 2+ months since and I've checked the links picked up by Google and Yahoo site explorer. I show 2 sites that are giving me backlinks. For the amount of time that it takes to submit to social bookmark sites this is a horrendous success rate. I may try the biggest sites and hope it does something. Digg, Delicious etc. Other than that I just don't think they are valued any more.

Social bookmarking works extremly well. Its all relative though, you cant get a page to number 1 with bookmarks only, no more than you can blog comments.
