Renew Your Doman Name before Google Penalizes You

Hello fellow warriors,

Wanted to let everyone know that if you wait to renew your domain name - let's say a month or two before it's expired, you've waited too long and Google will send your site back in the search results.

Happened to me. I'm in the top 3 position for the search phrase 'piano lessons' and have enjoyed that position for some time. But my domain needed to be renewed and I waited to do it. Google moved me back to like #35 or something.

I'm not positive this is what happened, but I assume Google puts a lot of algorhythmic weight on domain name expiration.

Don't let it happen to you.

Sounds a weird decision if Google really did that... But who knows.

Personally I leave registration until the last minute and only register for a year at a time usually, and I have never seen any of my sites drop prior to renewal.

    What's that phrase, again?

Oh yeah: correlation doesn't imply causation

Just because your rankings for a certain keyword phrase happened to drop at a time when your domain was due to expire, it doesn't mean that that's what caused it.

In fact, I'd go as far as saying I'm pretty sure that isn't the cause at all.

    What?

Your godaddy registration and google ranking have nothing to do with each other.

In the renewal of your domain name there's nothing to do with it in google It will update and takes time to take your PR ranking back but as other good guys here said just continue your quality link building.

Sorry mate. Not wishing to offend, but that is completely untrue. Your site is moving sure, but it has nothing to do with the timing of your renewal. I'm pointing this out only because if you continue with that assumption, you could be missing the other factor(s) that truly are causing your site do lose position. Domain renewals and/or expiration has absolutely 0 to do with your SERP, ziltch, nada.

Would also like to point out that your keywords are highly competitive (which I'm sure you know ) it could just be a case of your competitors creeping up on ya. Worth looking into anyway. Just sayin'.

This post is related to one a while back.
Some bloke said that google looks at the length of registration
as a trust factor. I'm not sure where these things start.

quiescen, no better place to get a quick answer to a question
like that than the WF. I think it's just coincidence.

There have been a lot of coincidences lately here as to falling
in SERPs. If you constantly check where you are, it's bound to
happen at some point in time. The trick is to not think that
what you do this second is going to affect something in 5 minutes.
Or even a day. Or two.

I also think google is changing almost on a constant basis to
keep SERPs fresh. No, I can't prove it. Just a feeling as to what has been
      going on with various people.

Yahoo used to be notorious for rotating top sites. Don't know if anyone
      had ever saw that either.

It actually makes some sense to cycle some in and out.

Have to agree...millions of people have their sites probably set on auto renew. If you logic were true, then there would be a new top 10 in every keyword search weekly. Just becaue I wake up and it's raining, doesn't mean the act of waking up causes it to rain.
