the micro niche sites with 1-5 pages are not dead. I believe they will never be dead, as long as they contribute in relevant information.

If a site is dedicated entirely on one keyword lets say "banana peeler 2000" and its the only one of its kind. Why should it need 100-10000 pages and a gazzillion links to rank first for banana peeler 2000?

I find nothing wrong with this tactics.

Keyword research is key of course.

Putting crappy spinner-type content on the sites will not be appealing to the readers and even if you rank high for a while people will be leaving your site very fast. Alarms will go off at Big G.-s place and you will get pushed back to the end of the line. Thats why its better to have more content ( usefull and well written content ) on your sites.
