moving blog to new domain - SEO concern

Hi I want to thank in advance for any answer.
I have a blog like mysite.wordpress.com. It's going pretty good. I write everyday with personal unique content. I would like to monetize it in the near future and this means moving it to a domain and hosting I have to buy.
I also want to do some SEO on the blog. My question is:
Is it better to first move the blog to new domain and then start to SEO? Or can I SEO my wordpress.com blog now and then transfer it to newdomain later?
What's a SEO perspective on this?
