What kind of traffic do you guys consider when starting an adsense site???

Presumably 1000 per month would be too low??

If the traffic is targeted and your site is well optimized for adsense then you can already make some money with that sort of traffic.

When you starting a new site it will always take time to get traffic numbers up, 1000 unique visitors for new site is not that bad at all.

You need more than 1000 per month if you want to make a decent income in my view...Depending on your goals I guess but 1000 is not so much....I set up an adsense website in the past and it got around 50,000 uniques a month but only made a little over $1,300 which is still not so good...If you need to make more money you should combine with affiliate offers as well....

1,000 per month is not high but its good for starting. Usually new websites get less traffic daily and you can be hopeful about the future of your website if you continue the works you have did yet.

From my short 12 month experience with Adsense I have found that there is two major differences.

For a niche targeted site, my CTR rates are up around 9%, but the traffic for these sites is generally less than 1000 per month.

Non niche sites which pull in a ton of visitors seem to get very low CTR rates as expected around and the CTR rate is more like 1-1.5%, however due to the traffic they make much more revenue.

Not sure if this helps you, but for me I would rather build generic sites for less CTR and more $$$. By generic I mean info sites, with lots of topics and articles.

A great way to get traffic I'm soon gonna use (low onmoney at the moment lol) is buying gig's on fiverr.com people will promote a message of your choice on their twitter/fb etc. accounts for $5 and they can have upto 100k followers, admittedly it may not be targeted traffic but you can always ask the person before hand what their pages main theme is ie. Mafia Wars, Gardening whatever... then find a product on Clickbank to promote on their page for just $5.... pretty good if you ask me.
