It depends. If you are looking at the page level then you would use the exact (or the phrase to a lesser extent) to determine potential traffic for that particular page.

Broad is ideal for determining the potential in the keyword/niche for an entire site. Keywords with a large number of braod searches are ideal seed keywords for finding exact matches.

to me, exact match is better option, sometimes, there will be huge gap for results with broad and exach match, and in this situation, exact match is always the correct one.

Get the broad match value, divide by 2, that's the amount of visitors you can expect (from Google) if you're # 1 on Google. This is based from my experience.

I suggest you to work on exact match but make backlinks for your web site from both exact and broad keywords. But as i said choosing exact match is better because it makes your purpose more clear. Its just my opinion.

Exact all the way. I made the mistake of using broad match and wasted a ton of time! It hurt, but it was a good lesson learned. See this related thread: http://www.warriorforum.com/adsense-...ng-myself.html

Don't call it quits just yet. There may be other LSI with significant search volume that you may want to rank for. See, if your broad search is 10,000 per month and the exact search is 10 per month, then there are another 10,000 - 10 = 9,990 searches happening on the related LSI keywords every month. So look whether you still have a winner keyword there in the exact match sense that can be easily managed because of your prior work on the broad keyword.

That might still save your efforts plus give you monetary benefits.

Exact match gives you the stats for the exact order of that phrase...So broad match can mean anything since Google combines many keyword phrases..So if you really want the true statistics for a phrase, then go with exact...Now also consider that Google does not display the serps exactly the same around the world (not even in your own country) so if you look a the stats, then you should consider that as well...If you are trying to understand the market overall, go with broad match...hope that make sense and good luck...
