About backlinking from blogs

Do backlinks from dofollow-blogs work nowadays? I got 300-400 backlinks from dofollow comments 2-3 month ago but haven't seen any changes for my site rankings in Google. I varied text in links (three different) and all my comments are approved. My keywords have quite low competition and my site is relevant for those keywords.

I know it takes time to get better rankings but is backlinking mostly waste of time (or money) nowadays?

Did you comment approve or you just commented on them and left them without checking them again?
Also did you make backlinks from quality blogs? Because only quality backlinks can help your ranking.

Almost every comment got approved automatically. No, they are not quality blogs like appliededu.com/blog/

I think they will work but if they don't then you should try some another strategies for backlinks. Don't depend only on this.

Do follow always work, I think that there should be atleast some change to your ranking. It might be possible that the keywords that you have selected will be highly competitive and this will be taking time for ranking. Keep on continue with your work, but now with dofollow focus on high pr and relevant blog too.
