  • Well the theory is that if you have an interesting site and write great content people will link to it.

I don't know how practical that is in the real world, so what most people do is go about getting these backlinks themselves.

    How, you might ask?

Writing articles and leaving your link in the resource box.
    commenting on blogs
Joining forums and having your link in your sig/profile
    Press releases

    ....those are just a few!

  • Straightforward Answer: Provide content on your site which can solve the problems, inform, educate, entertain or save the time of your target audience. Content can be write-ups, videos, software, audio, images, etc. Your content should add unique value to their lives. "Unique value" is a benefit which they cannot find anywhere else. However, after you post your useful content, you need to let your target audience know that your site exists and that you're offering useful content there. Go to forums and community sites where your target audience hangs out. Contribute unique value to the discussions there. Participate in discussions highly relevant to your content. You can point them to your content pages whenever it is necessary for them to go there so as to get unique value relevant to what is being discussed.

You can also build those backlinks yourself. Submit articles to article directories with your resource box links pointing to your content pages. While you're contributing to the discussions of those forums and community sites as described above, that's a chance for you to build your links. When your account in a forum for instance has been allowed to have a signature box, place your backlinks in your signature box. There are a lot of ways you yourself can build your backlinks. Submit to video directories. Submit to document-sharing sites. Post on forums. Post on community sites. Talk to owners of other websites and exchange your content for publication on their site in exchange for your backlinks placed below your content and also exchange your content with ads on their newsletters.

Do a search on Google using your target keywords. The top results would most likely be where a lot of your target audience hangs out. If you have your backlinks posted on those sites, some of them will see it and some of them might go to your content pages, maybe even a lot of them might click your links, depending on the quality of your content contributions on those sites.

So, there are 2 kinds of backlinks: Natural backlinks which people place on their sites because it will help their viewers and on the sites they frequently hang out in because they found the content useful and relevant to what is being discussed on those sites, with them as a part of those discussions. The other type is backlinks you build yourself, or your employees/VAs/etc.

  • I see it this way. If your site is good then people would want to link to it. The more links you have (backlinks) the more 'important' your site is.

Therefore getting backlinks is important when it comes to google seeing how important your site is and how high/low to place your site.

    Just a simple explanation.
