My linkwheel experiment

Hey guys,

I'm new (don't hold it against me). I used to frequent another forum, but its pretty much gone down the toilet, and the user interaction and post quality looks much better here, so I'm here to stay! A little background about me: I have been doing SEO for 5 years at a hobby level, and currently work as a PPC Executive for a large media agency.

A little background about this experiment. 5 years ago I made a very basic website, put adsense ads on it, did some SEO, and left it. It went to the top of UK google for its targetted KWs, and now earns me a bit of pocket money every month. Not much, but considering I don't touch the site, I'm happy. Its very seasonal, doing extremely well in January.

I was very surprised last month to see my earnings on one day shoot up from $3, to $62. Yes, an increase of $59!!! Those earnings only lasted for one day, before retuning to normal. Trying to figure out what the hell caused it, I realised that for that one day, my site had hit the top rank for my targetted KWs in US Google. Normally its halfway down the page.

So this has shown me that the potential to grab that top spot is definitely there! To help improve my offsite SEO, I'm going to try building a linkwheel. Not a horrible closed loop one, but a seemingly random one (not a wheel at all then?).

I will be documenting my progress here, as well as any change in traffic trends/SERPS/earnings. I will also be posting a picture each time I add a "spoke" to my wheel. This thread will act as a diary, as much for my benefit as anyone elses! (I'll be able to track the dates I made changes, etc). I will list what Web2.0 properties I use to build the links, so hopefully it'll be useful to some of you.

Until my post count is higher, I can't post links or images, so I'll just describe the linkwheel until my postcount meets the threshold (won't take long at all!).

At this moment, my site SERP for its targeted KWs on US Google is: 4

(Yesterday it was 5)

So far, I have created one hubpage, which links to my money site. I have also created a standalone blog which links to my money site. Both of these links were implemented yesterday. The hubpage has been indexed, but the blog post hasn't. I am in the process of creating a Squidoo lens to link to the standalone blog, and another web2.0 property which I haven't decided upon yet. Stay tuned for the diagram, things will become a lot clearer!

Thanks

Thanks guys. I created a post on Gather.com, which links to my standalone blog (which in turn links to the money site). I finished the Squidoo lens, which links to Gather.com post, and the standalone blog.

I will upload the image as soon as I can!

As promised guys, this is what the link wheel currently looks like:

I haven't noticed any permanent difference in SERPS yet, although my site was briefly at position 2 today. Unfortunately its back down to 4 now. I will try and add another spoke tonight.

The latest spoke is a Buzzle article. Over the weekend I'll be building links to the 3 spokes.

SERP checkers are saying my site is the 2nd result for its targetted KW, but when I manually search its showing up 5th. Either way, its moving around quite a lot in the top 5.

All of the properties in the link wheel are indexed in Google, which is a good start!

      A Lost interest.
B Hit high rank and doesn't want to share.
C Gone down the drain and is depressed.

      Take your pick.

Linkwheels would work great depending on your algorithm. It's not just about linking your money site from Web 2.0 properties.

Do you link your Web 2.0 properties from other Web 2.0 properties? Don't forget that if you want an authority Web 2.0 property you should link them too.

    Here is an example (this is not exactly what I mean but it's a nice example);

so you are saying you should have web 2.0 properties feeding into other web 2.0 properties and then to your money site?

Exactly. As long as your properties are strong, your backlinks will be stronger. Think about it strong web links from strong properties. Your money site backlinks will be better and good.

I have a website only with 37 backlinks, from 29 different domains/IP and it's already ranking on 6 keywords and getting around 800 uniques daily.

I have better advice regarding imagining. How about researching why I had such strong backlinks? What did people find on my site to give me such backlinks?

Next step is understanding this and building my content and website in that way.
