My linkwheel experiment
- SEO |
I'm new (don't hold it against me). I used to frequent another forum, but its pretty much gone down the toilet, and the user interaction and post quality looks much better here, so I'm here to stay! A little background about me: I have been doing SEO for 5 years at a hobby level, and currently work as a PPC Executive for a large media agency.
A little background about this experiment. 5 years ago I made a very basic website, put adsense ads on it, did some SEO, and left it. It went to the top of UK google for its targetted KWs, and now earns me a bit of pocket money every month. Not much, but considering I don't touch the site, I'm happy. Its very seasonal, doing extremely well in January.
I was very surprised last month to see my earnings on one day shoot up from $3, to $62. Yes, an increase of $59!!! Those earnings only lasted for one day, before retuning to normal. Trying to figure out what the hell caused it, I realised that for that one day, my site had hit the top rank for my targetted KWs in US Google. Normally its halfway down the page.
So this has shown me that the potential to grab that top spot is definitely there! To help improve my offsite SEO, I'm going to try building a linkwheel. Not a horrible closed loop one, but a seemingly random one (not a wheel at all then?).
I will be documenting my progress here, as well as any change in traffic trends/SERPS/earnings. I will also be posting a picture each time I add a "spoke" to my wheel. This thread will act as a diary, as much for my benefit as anyone elses! (I'll be able to track the dates I made changes, etc). I will list what Web2.0 properties I use to build the links, so hopefully it'll be useful to some of you.
Until my post count is higher, I can't post links or images, so I'll just describe the linkwheel until my postcount meets the threshold (won't take long at all!).
At this moment, my site SERP for its targeted KWs on US Google is: 4
(Yesterday it was 5)
So far, I have created one hubpage, which links to my money site. I have also created a standalone blog which links to my money site. Both of these links were implemented yesterday. The hubpage has been indexed, but the blog post hasn't. I am in the process of creating a Squidoo lens to link to the standalone blog, and another web2.0 property which I haven't decided upon yet. Stay tuned for the diagram, things will become a lot clearer!
Thanks
