I always wonder where people get their SEO knowledge from...whether it's through these forums, or from one person in particular who sort of guided you along the whole way.

For those of you who feel confident about your expertise in this field, where did you learn what you know? Did you have to pay for it?

Who taught me? I would have to say Father Time. Experience and a lot of different ventures & strategies learning what worked & what didn't work. A LOT of time!

Same here. Came with experience and failure for me....with emphasis on the FAILURE part!! :-) I am living proof that failing can be good IF you learn from it...and boy have I failed! But each time I picked up a new nugget to build upon... and now I have a pretty solid understanding of SEO.

I had some pretty good mentors along the way who showed me what I was doing wrong and how to correct it. Plus, I always invest in courses that teach me something new about how to run a profitable business online.

These two where really what taught me it. For the past 2.9 years I've been #1 for my main keyword. Traffic started at about 9,000 searches a month and now I'm getting roughly 3,000 people a day from the SERPs.

Lots of ebooks, trials & errors , practises , money and many tools and programs (get conned by many along the way ) are part of my experience in improving SEO.

Dan Thies gave me quite a good insight on more advance techniques of SEO in my early part of learning process.

And to me the most important is to do all the task yourself initially as you learn, not depending on outsourcing (that will come later). From knowledge zero since 2 years ago, I learn and get my hands dirty on web design, use different web editors, different ftp clients, write coding, set up own websites, CMS sites, tried all kinds of research and seo tools, write SEO contents, do on-page taggings, and backlinks using articles, press release, social media, rss, forums, blogging, videos, linkwheels etc etc .

Get yourself proficient in these areas before you do any outsourcing. Its the fastest way to increase SEO knowledge

I worked for a larger SEO firm for a few years before WP was hitting the scene. Learned the cores of SEO and how it works. After building several hundred website with them, I moved on to private web builds and my own seo sites. I also learned a lot from a friend who made some very successful sites in his time what SEO was all about. No ebook, app, program or download can compare with someone with tested proof in a real-world arena - 'who actually tells you the truth'/

I think everybody has to remember to do some of their own testing as well as following certain "gurus", especially if you are learning your stuff from the Warrior Forum.

There is a large case of the blind leading the blind in this industry so sometimes testing different thoeries on your own sites can lead to radical findings in SEO.

    Cheers,
    Dave

SEO is very much creative and spontaneous job, but failure makes you more perfect. Reading a lot of blogs, participating in forums, listening to videos as in where u can understand it properly. Implementing on what you learn is essential.

Now there are so many resources about SEO on internet that you can just sweep through all these forums/blogs and gather useful tips that are the most frequently mentioned.

SEO is not hard to grasp, it is just time consuming if you are doing it alone and in the fair way.

No, I didn't pay. Mostly, I got paid. I learned SEO from: (1) my former local employer, who paid me to implement the SEO/SEM/content marketing strategies of his clients; (2) my own previous and current corporate and business clients, who pay me to train qualified people to properly implement their SEO/SEM/content marketing strategies; (3) the search engines themselves, through my constant observations, tests and comparative analysis of my results; and (4) my self-learned knowledge in software programming, Unix/networking/server management and hardware level programming, which could possibly place me some steps towards the closest statistically accurate way possible to develop inferences about how crawling, indexing and ranking processes are done by search engines via mathematical instructions formulated to automate such crawling, indexing and ranking processes to most likely provide search engine users with the most relevant, most timely, most popular and most useful results. Though I'll never be universally accurate, not unless I get hired by one of the top search engine companies, but this would also mean I would still not be universally accurate since I'll most likely be statistically accurate only for that particular search engine company, so I for one think the observation-inferencing-testing-comparative result analysis work at this side of the fence is more challenging.
