Hi all, I'm just getting started in IM and would appreciate any feedback on my site, Dumbbell Set Guide - Everything You Need To Know About Dumbbell Weights please.

I'm currently reading just about anything about IM that comes recommended from this forum. I've started using Market Samurai and just bought SE Link Robot. So hopefully I've chosen workable keywords and will soon be building backlinks via SELR.

I'm a .NET developer by trade so no problem with the technical side of things.

Appreciate any on page SEO anyone would kindly offer and any general pointers pls.

I'm a little troubled about the narrowness of the domain name, you would expect such a specific nich site to have a well matched keyword domain name, Dumbell gets a lot of searches, but my quick look at G kw tool in short list mode only shows searches for "10lb dumbells" and various other weights. It won't take too many articles to exhuse the specific topic of dumbells, a lot of the associated topics you would also write about like lifting technique would also work with a site with a broader broader weight lifting / body building theme. One look would tell you I don't know much about weights, but here in the U.S. I have heard the term bar bells used more often in general conversation.

There have been reports of micro niche sites with exact keyword domain names ranking well, if you could find something like Weight Lifting, Weight Training, Home Gym, Strength Training all terms with 100,000+ searches you should get more traffic with similar content as your current theme calls for. Supposedly, if you don't expect type in traffic .org, .net variations are 'supposed' to rank as easily as .com
Lower search volume exact keyword domains might be easier to rank for their KW, dumbbell workouts and weight workouts are near 100k. A someone broader term might leave you in better position to branch out to supplements, etc.

I assume you have monetizing plans in place, and you will be getting visitors with dumbbells in mind. Do they mail order weight sets or purchase locally to save shipping expense.

The work so far on the site looks fine.

      Appreciate the feedback webapex.

G KWT is showing the monthly searches below which look decent numbers to me?

      Dumbbell set - 33,100
      "dumbbell set" - 27,100
      [dumbbell set] - 6,600

I have also started a broad site in the same niche, Get Big Fast | Discover The Secrets of Getting Big Fast!. I'm testing to see which I have the most success with.

I intend to monetize with a mix of clickbank and Amazon products, mostly via text links. I'll test the effect in conversion with an opt in once I have some decent figures to play with.

Thanks again for your comments, appreciated.

Looks great to me. But to further optimize your homepage for your targeted keywords, I suggest you increase the keyword density of your keywords on the body copy.

Your keyword density for the keyword "dumbbell set" on the body is - 0.5%, just add one more mention the most recommended keyword density for your main keyword is at least 0.6% - 2%

    Other things to do:

Focus on link building using your targeted phrases and on "relevant sites" (health and fitness, gym equipments, etc...)

The articles are very informative but they require some tweaking for SEO purposes. I also find the site's theme to be a little bland. The site can pop out with more color or striking graphics, I guess.

Yes, it is somewhat bland. I notice this template is made with Artisteer. It should be easy to change the color scheme so that it has more pop.

Not a bad idea for a site but I think your "get big fast" one is better because that is what people really want. You could probably be a bit more aggressive about your ad placement, you might even want to consider putting an AdSense banner in the right column. Looks like you are off to a good start.

Off the bat, I'd change the index page to show excerpts and not the entire post.

I also would ad an opt-in form, or popup, to start building a list. Fitness is a good niche if done right. Personally I love the Health niche because it always works and it's one of the 4 main header niches.

I agree opt-in is a better way to start building list of potential customer. You can offer a free e-book about how to do muscle building with simple step. Give it for free if someone submit their email. Don't forget to follow up them with your sales letter.

I think that as far as content goes, you've got good, valuable information. You've covered the bases with articles, tips, YouTube videos, pictures, and diagrams, so there's no problem there, but I think you could get even more creative with how you arrange the content on the page.

Right now, the page looks a little "bloggy" ("bloggish?"), which isn't necessarily a bad thing, but perhaps a little more color and a striking header with some good graphics could make the page "pop" a little more.

I also agree about adding an opt-in form to your page; even if you don't plan on doing a lot of email marketing, it's a great idea to build your list anyways, just to drop them a line once in a while with a good deal or offer related to your bodybuilding niche. Someone mentioned that you could do more with ad placement as well, and since you have a fair amount of blank space in the right hand column, it could be a good way to add a few more visuals while monetizing your site further.

One last thing: have you considered doing specific product reviews? You come across as being knowledgeable about this topic, and your readers might appreciate knowing what brands and products of dumbbells you'd recommend. (You could also do reviews on Weightlifting books, DVDs, athletic apparel, etc.) I see you've already linked to some Amazon products in the text, but you could also do actual product reviews and add a few photos to spark more interest and create a "call to action" for your readers to go check them out.

Great comments, I appreciate and will absorb them all.

An early site I created, Get Big Get Lean, seems to have most of the elements that were pointed out here. Perhaps I'll make my sites more like this one.

Thanks again for the feedback guys.

Why don't you use a more web 2.0 look to give your site more pop. Because right when I landed on it I was kinda bored. It's 2010 not 1995.

I would love to see more pictures in BIG resolution. Don't like when there are pictures you click on and get the same size one.

Your website is rich in articles maybe a little more about graphic, make them colorful plus the quality of your videos! Get Big Get Lean seems to be okey.

In my opinion your on-page SEO is fine, but I would like "Justify" alignment better for the content body.

There are a couple of things you might consider doing to change your site around a bit. None of them are deal breakers, and actually your site looks really nice. The page that you go to for the free report from the link in the sidebar is a little old school and it would be OK except that the rest of your site now looks so good and so different that it might be a bit jarring to people when they land there.

You've got some your settings in AllinOne set to the default. In particular the title tag for your pages. This is one where you can really make a great title that will stick out in the search engines because a lot of times this is what will show up in the search results.

Right now, you have it set to show the blog title after the pipe symbol. And everybody already knows where they are, you don't need to remind them.

It is not a terrible choice, especially because you have a keyword rich domain name, but if you did something like this:

Dumbbell Squat, Weight Sets and Simple Exercises, Workouts

(I am not advocating those particular keyword phrases, just using an example)

You could get a lot of related keywords into your title. You get about 60 characters for your title to display in most search engines, sometimes 62 or even 65. Having related keywords in your title also gives you the opportunity to use varied keyword phrases in your backlinking. You don't always have to stick with the phrases in your titles to link, but when you can give yourself a little extra boost, why not? :-)

You have some phrases in bold, that is a good thing. Your pages are long enough that you can logically break them up into sections and you can use your H2 tags to make keyword rich titles for your sections.

Like down around the part of your dumbbell squat page where you talk about the poor cousin to the barbell king, you could put in a title in H2 tags like:

Workouts With Dumbbells - A Great Alternative

And get another keyword phrase into your section title without looking like you are keyword stuffing the page.

Someone said your page looks a little bloggy, I am not sure what they meant, but for me it looks a little bloggy because your sidebar is on te right. If you move it to the left, and bring the action you want people to take to the top of the sidebar, either ditch the search box or put it down by the blogroll and put your link to you subscribe page up by the top, you might get more people paying attention to it. Not a lock on that, of course, but definitely an idea worth trying.

The other thing you might try is putting your links to your other blog posts down below the fold at the bottom of the posts, that is a logical place for those links to be and people will expect them to be there, and moving them will make them less important than the action you want your visitors to take.

Overall your site looks really nice, and that's not just because I prefer dumbbells over barbells either. :-)

I think you did a great job with Artisteer on your theme.

I would make every photo a clickable link to something that will give you value - a purchase or an email capture.

In your All-in-One plugin meta title I would put another keyword or two. Few people are going to search for "Everything you need to know about dumbbell weights." Put in phrases that folks use to find your niche.

In your footer you could give yourself a sitewide link by making your url into a link.

You are welcome, MrDack, AllInOne is a great plugin and if you are handy with coding and moving stuff around, it's good to be able to test a few things out ot see what converts better.

When (not so much if) you make it big, sounds good to me. You do have a nice looking site with good info, I suspect you are going to do really well with this.

              Two quick things Mr Dack,

I would add the All In One SEO plugin for your blog. You can custom your SEO keywords, descriptions, title tags, and also each post with this great plugin.

Second, I would insert lots of videos. Videos are a big thing that will get more visitors and help develop a following. Your niche lends itself to more visuals.

              Hope that helps,

              Bruce
