Backlink PR imprtance

Hi guys,
When building backlinks we all know that the higher the PR of the site your link is coming from the better. My question is how important is it for the site to be related to your own website?

Let's say you have a site about coffee cups and you find a really good website about motor cars that is a PR4. If you leave a comment on a blog with the link text 'Pete the coffee cup guy', will this still be effective? I'm not talking about spamming either, I'm talking about writing a valid comment.

Obviously it would be ideal to find a PR4 site that is related to coffee cups but its not always easy to find these type of sites related to your site.

I guess my question is, will it still have good value, as long as I have my keywords in the anchor text?

  • After much arguing on the matter, I had learned that relevant, dofollow, high pr backlinks are the best.

Relevance is quite important, but, of course, sometimes hard to find.

    • Terry Kyle has repeatedly stated that all of his #1 rankings were achieved without the use of a single relevant backlink, and I can attest to this. I have ranked my money site in Google's Top 5 without a single link related to its niche. This was done in less than one month.

Does relevance help? The jury is out. Is relevance needed? Not at all.

    • Loved your thoughts here. Patience is key. Whether you like it or not, Google will favor webmasters who practice patience. These are the marketers who publish top quality content and build links "naturally" over time.
  • yes.. relavence is really the most important factor in backlinks. but having a good pr backlink of different niche is also considered but having relavent backlinks is always comsidered as the best.
  • Relevance is very important. backlinks related to website business are very much important.

    • Hi Bingo123,

First let me say that sites don't have PR. PageRank is assigned to individual pages, not sites.

Secondly, website topics have nothing to do with how search engines determine relevance. Relevance is determine by the signals on the individual page and the signals from pages that link to a page.

Finally, irrelevant backlinks have no direct influence on SERP. However, since relevance is determined at the page level, simply using your targeted keyword, in or near your backlink anchor text, you are creating relevant on-page content for the backlink page. Relevance is paramount for Backlinking success.
