Will this Effect SEO?

My friend has a site that he wants to change from Joomla to wordpress so he can use a certain theme.

My question is - how, if at all, will this effect his SEO ranking?

I would also like to ask the best way to do it if it does hurt SEO?

Is it best to simply uninstall joomla and install wordpress?
Is it best to do a permanent 301 redirect and install wordpress as a folder such as site.com/home?

    I would think if it's going to result in broken links, it will definitely affect SEO.

    As long as you do 301 redirects for ALL the pages, you will be fine.

    That means redirect each page to it's new location.

    The best method to switch is to do a 301 redirect like mentioned above. Try to keep all the URL's the same if you can so you don't need the redirects because they still affect ranking a bit.

    Also you might see a big drop during the transition stage. Your site will recover if you do it properly

    You'll have to do a ton to ensure that there are no seo losses but more than likely you'll have to increase your seo efforts after the switch. No matter what you do make sure to do the 301 redirect for all the pages you have.

    Any changes in the SERPs because of switching platforms is not because of wordpress or joomla or any other platform but just because of the fact that a switch did happen.

    I think , you have taken enough care .it will not affect SEO. If at all ,you find keyword dropping ,keep patience it will reappear within few days.

    Any changes which alter the current URL structure will affect your website's SEO ranking. If you can successfully perform 301 redirection, most of the SEO will be saved.

    Care your URL structure. It is the most important factor.

      Yes ,it can take effect for seo but it all the links are same then it will not effect

    Hi Steve,

    If I was tackling this, here is what I would do..

    1. I would use the backup feature in Joomla (haven't used it in years so can't remember what it is called..) Then transfer all the files to a subdomain on your site..

    Ie... http://temp.yourdomain.com/

    2. Add an entry in your robots.txt file in the root of the subdomain:
    http://temp.yourdomain.com/

    with this...

    User-agent: *
    Disallow: /

    3. I would install Wordpress in the root domain and continue replicating the content from your old Joomla - http://temp.yourdomain.com/ to Wordpress http://www.yourdomain.com/

    Paying particular attention to making the URL structures exactly the same as they were in the old Joomla setup...

    If this is not possible, then as orvn has already said you have a lot of 301 entries to place into your .htaccess file...

    I would also turn off pinging in Wordpress as you'll overping the servers while replicating the content over...

    Once you've successfully transferred all the content over to the Wordpress platform, enable Pinging in Wordpress and drop the subdomain...
