Is this doable?

Hi all,

My new site is around a month old now and is indexed by google.

I would love to get to the first page in google.co.uk for the keyword "Oxfordshire". Is this doable?

You can see the site in question in my sig line. I have a lot of time to dedicate to ths project over the holidays, but have a tight, budget.

With this in mind, I guess my question would be - how would you achieve this result?

Willing to learn...

  • A slightly longer tail might be beneficial.
    You're going to have a hard time ranking for this keyword.
    A page one isn't impossible, but is it worth it, time and effort considered?

  • Not something I would go for but I'm sure some hardcore warriors would give it a go!

    First two sites on page one are PR6 .gov sites then you have Wikipedia in position three.

    • Yea not to be a pessimist, but that keyword is very very competitive. Just running it through Market Samurai returns competitors that have page ranks of 6 with over 15,000 backlinks... Something like 'Oxfordshire health' looks a lot more do-able.

    I know its going to be hard, but I am up for the challenge - just need to know where to start...

    I did a few years ago optimise one of my sites for the keyword "Hypnotherapy" and got on the front page for google.co.uk - I'm still there today, but I know that techniques have changed since then!

    • Also, if I use the anchor text 'Challenge Oxfordshire' will that still push me up in the serps for the keyword 'Oxfordshire'?

    • In regards to your question about SEO from "challenge oxfordshire" yes you still get value, but "oxfordshire challenge" will get you more SEO for your link. In terms of the first question, I don't think you'll rank and I don't think you should bother trying. I don't think you'll rank because most of the sites on the first page are government agencies, local news organizations, etc. It's very tough to beat them. Even if you got on the first page you'd be at like number 9 or 10 and no one would see you. The reason I don't think you should bother is because people searching town names generally are thinking about visiting, not their health. Generally the only time residents Google their town name is when it acts as a specifier: "used cars oxfordshire," or "pizza delivery oxfordshire." Even if you did rank, people that found you wouldn't be interested in getting healthy.
