Your Advice about Yahoo Directory

Hello all,

I have 8 month old website that receives 250 unique visitors a day. Most of them are coming from Google and just like 5 visitors a day from Yahoo. As a part of my link building strategy I am considering to submit my site to Yahoo directory for review. As you know it is costly. I am curious to get your feedback about it. Do you think it is worth that? Did your traffic improve after being admitted? Was this increase in Yahoo traffic or both Google and Yahoo? And finally, any tips for preparing my site for review?

I know it worked great in the past, but I know that Internet changes every day. This is why the feedback of those who had the most recent experience with Yahoo directory is most appreciated.

Thanks and best regards!

  • I still pay for yahoo dir submissions. Google uses them to rank you higher as it's one of the only human edited directories left.
  • Thanks a lot, so it seems like something I must do too.
  • I paid the $299USD last Tuesday and my site wasnt listed.

    Sucks

    • Did they explain at least what is the reason? I mean do I really need to remove all Adsense ads, and Amazon links before I submit? I heard this could be the reason to get rejected sometimes.

Dave, thanks for your input. I was just curious, does this link increase Yahoo traffic? There is a huge difference between what I get from Google and what I get from Yahoo. Thanks.

Any site that I care about, I submit to Yahoo Directory. It's a decent expense if you're getting started out, but I think it's worth it. I've charted multiple sites that will get indexed, hang out in the 200-300 range for search results, and once the directory page gets crawled/indexed then they jump up to top 30.

I posted somewhere the images of this happening. I charted the rankings in SEO elite and showed the email on the date I was accepted to the directory.
  • for yahoo listing we have to pay?
  • Pay me the $299 instead and I'll get you way better exposure through organic rankings on all search engines lol. Really dude your money could be spent in better places like with a real SEO. Anyone suggesting yahoo paid directories is too much of a newb to know the real benefits of link building that will never go away such as a annual paid directory link.

    • Yahoo directory has its place within certain marketplaces. Depending upon a range of factors, such as strength of competition especially, Yahoo can be quite beneficial in terms of improving Google search rankings.

The site I just submitted which was accepted and listed, has moved from page 15 to page 2 overnight, on a relatively competitive keyword, simply by being listed within the Yahoo directory. I can now begin applying further backlinking methods to move it higher in the SERPS.

Suggesting that anyone using Yahoo directory as a paid service for backlinking is a "newb" is pretty ignorant and well, wrong infact.

  • Not worth it if you ask me. For $300 you can pay to have your link on dozens of high authority sites, guaranteed. A lot of people don't realize that many Yahoo Directory links are actually PR0. Not all, but many.

  • i also would look at alternative sources rather than pay the fee to get in the directory. There is also DMOZ that you can submit to as well. You might not get listed, but at least it is free.
    • [ 1 ] Thanks
  • Before you list, just double check your site and make sure it is squeaky clean, no broken links, 404's stuff like that as it is a non refundable payment. You will wait a week to 10 days before you get an email saying it was included. If you are on page 2 or 3 in the SERPS, you will definitely get a nice bump up in the SERPS from inclusion. It has happened every time I have listed a site there.

  • If $299 isn't much for you then you can go ahead with it but if its a significant investment then you should look at other uses for your money. DMOZ is of course free and does give a nice boost so you can always give that a shot.

  • The paid directory for which you pay $299, it is useful, it can increase your page rank very fast...
    • [ 1 ] Thanks
  • Thank you all. I applied to DMOZ when my site was very new like 6 months ago and never heard from them since. I realized that many pages at Yahoo are PR0 too, this is why I was wondering about the whole thing. I will probably have to try to know for sure.
  • If your website is business-related we've had a lot of SEO success with business.com's listings.
    • [ 1 ] Thanks
  • yahoo directory goes to moderate and it's paid. So we won't go to buy a listing from yahoo. I think yahoo organic results depends on on-page optimization mostly. I got good traffic from yahoo even my site is not listen in yahoo directory.
    • [ 1 ] Thanks
  • Surely Yahoo directory can improve your ranking because its very authority and it has many backlinks and having a link from it worths like hundreds of other backlinks from other websites. But its expensive and if you have budget, its good that you do it.
    • [ 1 ] Thanks
  • Thank you all, I just wanted to ask last question. My site is an entertainment site, so I don't think business.com is suitable. I wanted to ask one last question: do I really need to remove all affiliate links and Adsense before applying for Yahoo directory review? My site is not spammy but I have one Adsense block on each page and some affiliate links and plenty of good content.
  • DMOZ for me is still the best directory.
    • [ 1 ] Thanks
