Redirects and search ranking

It could be totally unrelated, but soon after adding clean url 302 redirects to my site(I wanted real time amazon tracking). I lost major rank. I could have done 301s, its not an issue of linkjuice though.
I'm a bit gun shy now about making any changes until after Christmas, but does Google penalize for making a redirect in the form:
http://yoursite.com/a/<item>
which goes to Amazon...
Anyone have experience with this?
