My website is for my local offline business. It is ranking right below all of the ones on google maps which are first which means that if there was no google maps I would be first! Is there anyway to get on top of google maps? Or do I have to get on google maps then try to get to the top of that?

Why are you not on google maps already? That is the #1 choice for local
    businesses.

Get yourself on google maps pronto. It's free. Just remember to answer all
items truthfully, like address, type of business, location, zip, telephone number, etc.

If I go on google maps will my organic listing still show up? Or are they somehow tied into one? I don't want to lose my organic ranking thats for sure!

Organic is not affected by maps. Some "local" searches don't
      even show map results.

Google also pulls in info from other local stuff, like yelp and
local newspapers that review the local business, as well
as google users. That can help get business.

This has been happening for about a month and a half now, just so you know.

Sign up with Google Hotpot and Places, add everything from phone numbers to photos of your business. If you have multiple locations, put them all there and include different photos.

Now have five of your friends rate and review your business (active google users are better). Five ratings means you get pretty little stars next to your search result. The stars give you a boost in the maps ranking.

Places rankings are extremely variable. If I have a Google default location set, it will show places results by proximity.

But the stars really do help.
People like stars. People click on them.

You should of jumped on Google maps yourself by now. You're other rankings will not be affected. You can have multiple listings.

If you are a local business you also need to jump on those review sites, Google seems to love yelp right now so if you don't have a listing add one yourself so you can be found.

No reason to right against Google Maps, just join them!

Only certain niches are displaying organic results above the local, but for most it is either displaying local above or the new combo listing. I would suggest that you incorporate the GP listing into your other seo efforts. If you just want it done and don't want to bother with it, pm me with your contact info and we can work it out.

    Do what exactly?
Add a places account and fill in the form, or something more?
