Title Tags for Multiple Keywords - Same Page

Hey Gang

I am really angry as I tweaked my title tags and I seriously feel it affected my rank about 3-4 notches.

I change the title tag because my SEO guy, who is the top rated guy on Elance that I hired, instructed to me.

But part of me thinks he just manages the SEO company, and doesn't know a ton about SEO.

Oriiginally, I wrote with pipes between the words. Imagine my term(s) are dog food, dog chow, and puppy food

Originally I'd write it as : Dog Food | Dog Chow | Puppy Food

But he suggested I never repeat one word,
Instead, write it as:

Dog Food, Puppy Chow

Or something like that.

?

Do you guys agree?

Where is the BEST place to learn to write a title tag?

Or has my loss in ranking being a result of other factors?

If you have a first page listing that is generating significant traffic, then it is best not to alter the title. Create new pages for the new titles. Go back to the original title, and if your rankings improve than you know it was a mistake.

Thanks guys. What is your suggestion on how to write the ultimate title for a home page that you desire to rank for many terms?

Part of me feels ranking 1 home page for many terms is kind of outdated nowadays, and the real move is to rank several pages for unique terms. Higher conversions too..

You are trying to stuff your titles with keywords. Not a good idea.
Yukon has kept it short and sweet.

Stop trying to make title for search engines and think what a visitor
would want to see. This is exactly the advice google gives you.

If anyone has not seen that guide in a while, it's been updated.

Dog food, puppy chow is not bad.

    If you're SEO guy suggested,

    dog food, puppy chow

there is nothing wrong with that. Its perfectly fine and if you are seeing major changes its probably not because of the changes you said you made.

I suggest you to choose one of these keywords as title for your website and then try making backlinks for it AND other words you want to optimize your website for. I mean those two other words. Repeating a keyword three times is not a good choice.
