Building A Large Content Site Based on Adsense and Banner Ads

I am looking at creating a large content site on a decently site sized niche. Basically, I would like to do something similar to the famous ask the builder dot com site and was curious what suggestions and recommendations you guys have?
As a point of reference, I am used to making smaller adsense sites that focus on high paying keywords and have done pretty well with that. However, I am interested now in actually creating something that has some intrinsic value rather than just for the money. I am curious to hear from those who have done something similar and what I can expect?
