Where should I learn keyword research for PPC?

OK, I've been through a lot of courses over the past 3 years or so and I still can't get my head wrapped around selecting the right keywords for PPC.

Where should I learn it?

    I think if you use Google adwords keyword tool, you can learn it and also get ideas for your desired keywords. This is a free can help you to find keywords for your PPC ads.

    Hi Jason,

    Google keyword tool yes. There is a lot to be gained from this tool if you spend the time.

    Here's how i do it:

    Enter a keyword relevant to your niche, choose what country (advanced optiions) you want to get figures for and check "Exact" from the LHS box and uncheck "Broad" to get more realistic figures.
    Enable the "Estimated Avg. CPC" column from the menu you get by clicking the "Columns" button at the far right of the screen just above the list of suggested keywords.
    From the "Advanced options" just above the search button choose "Estimated Avg CPC" from the drop down beside "Filter keywords", choose "<=" from the drop down beside it, and enter the maximum amount you would like to pay per click in the next field.

    Click the search button and go through the list. You want to choose high traffic/low competition keywords that have commercial value and are relevant to your site so that you get a low bounce rate. Im sure you can identify these if you are involved in IM (Exclude terms like free, advice, help, tips etc unless they are relevant to what you are selling)

      I guess my question is... how do you find keywords that have commercial value?

      And... what kind of numbers are we talking about when you say "high traffic?"

      And... what kind of numbers are we talking about when you say "low competition?"

    i have been doing alot of keyword research, and ro be honest with you don't only rely on the google keyword tool. In the past i have had a keyword with 3000 searches a month, and after a month when i checked my traffic analysis i had not more than 50 visits. So here is the plan, after getting a nice keyword, use the google keyword tool to check the competition, then open wordtracker, type in your keyword then click onn gtrends to see the daily visits you can get from being pos 1 on google. Then you don't stop there, there is a free keyword tool called traffic travis which you can download free. This tool gives you daily traffic stats for any keyword. I think daily traffic stats gives concise expectation than monthly. That's why i also urge you to look for daily stats.

    The way money is truly made with PPC in Testing and Tracking. You must start with Good targeted adwords traffic. If that keyword is getting about 80 visit a day or better it is good but you also need to see how much adwords competition you have as well. What PPC Tools do you use now?

        Traffic: the higher the better.

        Competition: the lower the better.

        Its a question of testing and tinkering as SEOExpert999 rightly says.

        Commerciallity: If you have Market Samurai then watch the vidoe at the Market Samurai "Dojo" ("Golden Rule #4: How to Assess Commerciality").

          Hey John, about the way they suggest assessing commerciality... Do you find that to be a formula that's actually profitable for you though?

          I understand it's based on the bid others are placing on a keyword X the amount of traffic the keyword generates.

          The only problem is... I think most AdWords advertisers are probably dumb and run up the bids on keywords that don't have commercial potential.

          So I don't know if that's a good formula to go by.

          I find most PPC buffs are secretive with their keyword selection tactics... makes it kind of tough for guys like me to not lose money when doing PPC.

    Hey there, I just picked up Perry Marshall's Definitive Guide To Adwords for $49 and it's a great read. Like most people have said here what you're really looking to do here is test, tinker and tweak.

    What I suggest is this: Go to the google adwords keyword tool and input your site information there. Google will then pull the keywords that they think are relevant to your site and then you can start selecting the 6 - 12 exact match over 1000 for your first campaign.

    If you have a page that has the exact keyword you're going for I would set that as my destination page for this campaign at which Google will see that and hopefully give you a good QS.

    Split test your ads: For your first campaign, just switch the first and second lines around and see which one is the winner. I would suggest you wait for around 30 clicks before you test, tinker and tweak again so you know for sure that you've got a winner and then rinse and repeat.
