I think link building by posting in various forums is one of the great ways to increase site popularity. It brings visitors together with the backlink. However high PR reputed forums really count much.

Just make sure you aren't posting for the sole purpose of generating links/fishing for clients.

Excluding places such as this, it seems quite hard to come by forums that are willing to allow 'commercial' signatures.

I've long debated with this idea of forum posting and the value of it.

On one hand it can work as long as you find the right forum and post the link in the right way.

On the other hand if you break any of the TOS's of the forum involved you stand to get in serious trouble including the possibility of being banned.

As of yet I'm undecided on forum posting as a powerful backlink strategy especially when you have social bookmarking and networking services like Twitter available. For the record, if you use Twitter check out GoTwitr as I've never found a service better than their's for growing and managing Twitter. Best part is that it is free to use.

Forum posting for links isn't a real effective link building plan.

I think the value of a forum link is in the value you end up providing the other members. I've always found that the people with signatures related to the topic they invest the most amount of time trying to help people in, result in the most value.

For example, if a forum member has a signature related to ad copy, or sales copy, and then devotes a portion of his time on the forum helping out, and answering questions on that topic, he's (or she) is more likely to end up getting traffic, or clients from it.

At the end of the day, you get out of it what you put into it.

Though Forum posting is a great way of link building and to gain traffic but think like as JonWebContent said. Because it's like an open chat room and we're sharing our thoughts, fresh ideas, problems and even personal feelings too.
