Oh no he didn't

Well I am not so much asking you about your site as I am asking about my sites. In 2010 I asked myself that question many times. I mean I build backlinks. Won't tell you no but I did realize some time ago that I wanted to get natural links as well.

Honestly who wants to be running backlinks software and dropping links forever. Theres a time when you want to own a web property where well its kind of like Warrior Forums - the traffic sustains itself. Best of all if I can build a loyal community around my business (if not maybe I am in the wrong business?).

So I realized I need a site that kind of ranks itself. Can't say I am there but I finally am on my way. Some lessons I learned.

A) no one much likes to link to articles anymore. Yeah I know someone will fly in and say that they get ton loads of links to their stunning irressistable well written content but by and large those days of that dominating the link graph are gone.

B) People link to the noteworthy , the resourceful and the entertaining. Ocassionally an article goes viral. Videos goes viral almost every day. How often do you see people refer in these forums to really great articles compared to people referring to aweber, scrapebox or articlerobot.
We really do talk more about resources online and off.

C) if you want to have a site that interests people enough to link to you you need to build more than a single page site. prefrably you should be able to add alot of interesting features to it without having to become a programmer.

Earlier this year I showed in a thread here that you can rank a site just as well with straight HTML as with Wordpress. Technically I found out this was correct but later on I found that for a site that really has options and features that can gain attention straight HTMl wasn't reallythe way to go.

Wordpress allowed me to add many features and so did Joomla which I finally decided to go full throttle with along with a lesser known platform called Umbraco. In 2011 I plan to ak the question above alot and figure out what features, videos and resources I can offer to really grow my site.

If you can't think of a reason why someone should link to your site then why should they? If you don't build something that people are even a little fascinated with then you will be dropping backlinks when you are 84 while your teeth soak in a glass.

Great post Mike, I have had exactly the same thoughts that you have had. I think many 'hardcore' linkbuilders are neglecting to take full advantage of this 'Web 2.0' thing excep building Hubpages and Squidoo Lenses.

You're dead on imo, that people don't link much to articles anymore unless they are breaking news or really authority articles - like the best on the internet.

I want to make the site interactive in some way and above all look and feel the part.

I feel like Wordpress is a bit limited in how it looks, feels and performs. It's hard to make a Wordpress blog be really pro in all aspects as anything but a blog. There's some plugins like Buddypress though, which I think could be useful. Good call on Umbraco, I am going to look into that. I have been researching Joomla recently cause imo it looks better and has inbuilt community features. I would think something like Drupal would be the best choice actually, but it requires programming skills.

      Hey Jack,

I tried with wordpress. I did but though people say you can do anything with it once you start adding up the limited commercial plugins available for certain features it just gets expensive or you have to build it yourself. One beware note on Umbraco. its developer centric and based on .net so building anything in it has some significant learning cuve if you are not into that.

Now Joomla. To be honest I think the only reason that Joomla doesn't totally destroy wordpress is its interface. theres very little you cannot build in Joomla. yes there are commercial plugins but a good deal of them are still GPL. You buy ONCE you build as much as you want. With most of the premium wordpress plugins they want you to buy per site.

I've been putting together packages and working out some usability issues and have it now where I can build a social network, database locked to a forum and all kind sof other features within a day or two into my sites. even found a way to directly add members to my list.

Plus with joomla you can move things around in a way that you really can't (unless you buy premium themes) with wordpress. Ton loads of themes with joomla as well. some of the clubs have some incredible offers.

Whatever you use its a good time to get into building features into your site . Everythng is adding social network features (wordpress, joomla, drupal , vbulletin Phpbb and on and on)and in a few years will be standard and expected at ANY site. There are a lot of niches that big companies could never cater too that now with much cheaper tools can be profitable.

You can start a community around golden retrievers in 48 hours and under a hundred bucks. Sometimes for nothing.

I have used Joomla in the past and, quite frankly, it is much more powerful than Wordpress. You can build any type of website with it, as opposed to just a retrofit blog...but I still love me some Wordpress

    Slight topic hijack:
You guys do know that Drupal Seven is the future of CMS platforms? It's absolutely unparalleled in ingenuity, the frontier of Web 3.0. I advise anyone looking into CMS platforms to experiment with Drupal, fast!

Drupal was always solid but I could never recommend it because for the end user I just hated the admin. Now they have changed that so I may jump on board. A few of the features sound like what Joomla already has but drupal always tended to be a bit more extensive.

Well, as always, I can't think of any reason why somebody who didn't work for or make money from thefind.com would link to it but, yet, people do.
