Interesting content question for "new" site.

If you see some of the threads I start, they are normally "strange"
things to roll around. Here's the latest.

I just got a new cool domain. Now it's a dot com, and we all know that most
all cool dot coms probably had a previous life. So, I do a little digging and
find out it was a live site between 2003 and 2007 via the wayback machine.

Now here's something to bounce around.

How about recreating the site, almost exactly as it was, using the stuff
you find on the wayback machine?

Now I don't really have any intention of doing this, although I was curious
if I could get any ideas for some quick content.

Any crazy thoughts?

    Paul,

This is something many of us do with buying expired high-PR domains - put their original content back on them initially in the hopes of keeping their existing backlinks (and Pagerank), and 'transitioning' them to other content while building new backlinks.

If you're careful about researching your domains, this works around 75% of the time.

That said, I've also found some *very* interesting stuff while checking potential buys via Way Back Machine...

The domain has been dropped for over 3 years.

      I'd start new.

Too much time has passed for its older links to be still alive. You should start with fresh content.

What exactly are you trying to accomplish with the domain? If you arn't going to use it or create content, you could just set up an auto blog.

Oh I am going to develop it. Actually, same niche as the old one. Just a crazy
      thought about "instant" content.

Yeah, the links are gone. Long gone, unfortunately. I was hoping there would be a
couple still around. Google says there is, but if I visit the page, it's zapped.

I was actually honestly looking to toss up a good looking index page, but the old
site actually was horrible. A 5 year old could have done better. Looked like a 1997 redux.

DO IT! You'll probably have almost immediately top SERP results! Do any backlinks still exist?

How did you find out that it had a "previous life?" I would like to know how
    Thanks!

If your using it in the same niche then I would say do it. Sure the links are gone but what would it hurt to recreate a couple of pages throw some links at them and see if they rank fast. Who knows maybe some PR could come back, if there was any;-)

You could name your links the same, but you can't just go pick up someone's content (even from an expired website) and use it as your own without the author's permission.

You might use the same link URLs and post your own content, but to copy the content that was on the site when someone else owned the site is copyright infringement.

Just post your own content... it's fresh, it's yours, and it's legal.
