domain name: key-phrase.com or keyphrase.info

Hey
I am making up my January goals at the moment and doing research
My main goal (other than generally make money) is to learn more seo
I am at first going after low competition keyphrases but that have over 1000 searches a month

I have done various pieces of research and have found a few phrases
I want to buy domains with the phrase in it but most of the .coms are gone as are the .nets. In most cases the .infos are all thats left (of the main GTLDs)

So in terms of SEO which do you feel is better .info or a .com with a hyphen in it

Personally I am moving towards a hyphened.com

    • I find it depends a lot on the # of searches done for a particular kw.

      For example, for local searchs for geo-specific kws, I've been able to rank #1 and 2 with .info's.

      For "cheap car insurance" definitely go with a .com,net or org..........if you could even find it for that kw

  • In terms of SEO it doesn't matter. Take some time to search for the many extensive discussions on this issue we've had over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over again in this forum.

    • Whilst I completely agree that domain extensions don't matter, for the most part, in my experiences .com's, .org's and .net's have performed better than anything else specifically in regards to Exact Match Domains.

      When not using EMD's, I have quite a few .info's that rank well just as easy as the others.

      Although, that really isn't over a huge sample size.
  • I would go with key-phrase.com over a keyphrase.info .

    Hyphens in the domains allow the search engines to see the separate words. While they can cause confusion they are slightly better for seo.
  • I will buy a dot com with a hyphen in it to get my keyword in the domain name - the bots ignore punctuation and hyphens.

    As for a dot info, I learned the hard way that Google has its own rules about what it will keep indexed with that extension. I can tell you what NOT to show on a dot info: anything built with the Build a Niche Store script, and any eBay partner network feeds.

    I sold an eBook on a dot info and stayed indexed. I am also showing adsense on a couple of dot infos and those are staying indexed as well.

    • Google seems to be just fine with informative, information based sites built on dot info extension. I see plenty of indexed adsense sites on dot infos. It really matters what your website's monetization is. It seems to me that Google is giving the message that if you are primarily a commercial site then you should be using a dot com extension.

      This does beg the question, have you ever searched for info on Noam Chomsky? How about regular expressions, roman coins,craft ideas, or how to check your page rank? Maybe you've never needed to do some research to find out if New York was a sanctuary city or to find out something about New York transit. Did you ever look into Spain tourism?. Oh, and have you thought about moving your money to a local bank before you go shopping on Black Friday?
    • I do have few info sites and Google luckily do not devalue them, I have a friend whose .com gets devalued by Google and I do really suspect the it has something to do with the SEO he does and the way he does it rather than the domain extension itself. Whether it is .info, .com or net or something else some people always complain and blame domain extensions, hyphens, keywords, Google or somebody or something else but some people can have very good results whatever domain extension they choose.

      To the original question, if it is an eCommerce site then yes go for .com as .info would not be suitable for that sort of project but if the site is to provide information mainly than obviously .info would be the best choice.
  • I never buy anything less than a .com.net.org, but I can comment that in my past experience, a hyphen will severely dilute the power of the exact match domain. I would prefer a short prefix or suffix over a hyphen every single time.
