Custom URL

Hi All, I have started using a new CMS that allows custom urls...
www.domain.com/ .html
I can pretty much add what I like between the forward slash and the .html
The questions is, for a multiple page website how do I choose what to put there?
Do I add the page name and my chosen target keyword or pick a different keyword for each url?
What works best for SEO?

Also if I'm building a new website that is built using different software and want to maintain the links from the current old site is that possible? If so how please?

  • the ideal is to use the key terms in the title, description and also in the friendly url so you keep ahead of the competition. As for the old links, do the 301 redirect urls to the new ones ... so you keep all efforts acquired during this time.

    • To maintain old links, you need to maintain the old pages and just redirect them to new ones. I believe these are 303 redirects. All the URL stuff already said is correct, just make sure that you're not dynamically changing these URLs over time, or you'll be constantly setting up redirects, and never sure what's going on. Especially if you run PPC, it's important to have URLs which are recognizable to you so you know where conversions occur.
  • Wouldn't you want a way to disable that feature? Seems like a lot of work coming up with names for url's. Yukon's description seems to be universally accepted and appreciated by the S.E.'s
