What would happen if a website was structured without a home page, but instead tons of highly targeted pages, all with backlinks poitning at them?

will the home page die in the future of SEO?

What site does it load when you type in domain.com?

Depending on your host, it may be possible to get a 404 error when typing
in the domain.com, but some hosts will redirect it.

The only way I can see this working, would be to have a redirect script
that took you to a random page when going to domain.com

If it redirected to the same page, that would in effect be your homepage.

If your homepage just had links, it's still a homepage. EZA, for example.

If you did not have all pages linked together, you would need to build
tons of backlinks for each page. But if they were all linked together, any
page would be in effect a "homepage".

If you have no central page, and no internal linking, you would need to
SEO your brains out for each individual page. Quite a dim prospect.

Well there would of course be a home page on the domain, but the site would have any pages that rank specifically for many terms. Each page would have tons of backlinks to it.

Rank pages, not domain -- that is exactly what I want to do.

Domain will eventually rank over time because the ranked pages will define it.

          Right?

I am not trying to be wise-ass here or to reinvent wheel. I am just wondering why it wouldn't work.

Also, Yukon and Paul -- Could you guys please give me a few paragraphs of the PERFECT site design for a site that would rank well for ... 12 terms?

I'd love to know. I respect your intelligence and I dont really know much myself.

You know its the way you asked your question that throws people off. A website cant be without a homepage, unless you do what Paul explained (which was a pretty good explanation).

But yes if you throw backlinks at your internal pages and all those pages internally link back to your homepage then your home page will at some point most likely start ranking. But why not help it along and build a few backlinks to the home page? Or is this just a hypothetical thinking exercise?

Im sorry if the question was confusing.

I meant, there would be a home page, but not in the way most people think of it as the main website's central page. To the SERPS, it would be there. To the customers, it would be there.

but when building it and building links, the creator would have a different mindset and approach each sub page like a landing page.

I know this idae is nothing new, but I just feel many still are designing sites around the home-page as basically the page that gets 95% of the traffic.
