1 Authority Site Or 200 Sites?

I'm curious about what you SEO buffs might think about this...

Why do some guys have 1 authority site and others have 200 sites?

Do they just have 1 authority site when it's in a niche that has massive enough traffic to drive to your site?

For people with 200 sites, do they just have 200 sites so they can explore other niches because just 1 site would be already "tapped" for traffic?

The reason why I ask is because it seems more logical to have just 1 authority site in 1 niche and build all of your leverage up using that 1 site.

That's a good question. You can have an Authority site that has 200 different keyword rich page titles targeting 200 different products/keywords, or you can have 200 different domains doing the exact same thing.

Either way you're going to be doing the standard keyword/competition research and backlinks for each page/domain. Some people believe the only way to go is with and EMD. And exact match domain could be "yourkeyword.com" or it could be "mybigjuicedsite.com/yourkeyword/"

You've got options. If you choose to go with an Authority site, obviously it will take time and lots of work to become a TRUE authority site... Kind of like when someone says "Oh, well it's on about.com." Catch my drift..?! Or you could just build up a bunch of single sites rank em and bank em.

Depends on what you're looking to do with your websites...

    Well said Scott.
It works both ways, but really depends on you. I'd personally go with 1 authority site and then i'll try to rank inner pages for various keywords.

I personally like subdomains. People on here will say "you have to work too hard to rank each subdomain, subdirectories are better..." WTF are they talking about?! You want to rank ANY page you have to put work into it! SubWhatever! Start the backlink building from scratch!

Plus I like the idea of COMBING GoDaddy over finding that ONE PERFECT domain... And then not buy any more after that

Only problem with subdomains is, what if you want to sell the sites separately?

With one authority site, I would always be worried about a server crash, or some act of God knocking it out! Income gone!

I like bgmacaw's suggestion, I got this Idea from Lisa's InlineSEO course, why not make a network of Authority sites?

The trick it to make each site maintenance free, which would mean a bit of thought beforehand. You want to offer services or information which is very low maintenance.

Latest news or hot gossip wouldn't work for that.

Then again, I'm not there yet, but I will be!

      That's what I'm moving toward.

I want to have less headaches and centralize everything... and get a more narrow focus so everything I do builds up the same leverage.

Just wondering if going with 100s of EMDs has an advantage I'm not thinking of.

Actually the real trick is to build up a network of authority sites. You can start with one and build from there. Two of my favorite examples are icanhascheezburger.com and breitbart.com. They started out small and built a network of authority sites in their niches (silly pictures and conservative oriented news/commentary). Of course, having connections helps you build a mega-authority network but you don't have to have them to put together a decent network of supporting content sites.
