Newb question - backlinks

I have a brand new site that I have been trying to build backlinks to. I have been going through a list of high PR directories and submiting articles(about 35). I've been doing 3-4 per day and I am now on day 3.

According to yahoo site explorer my competition on google page 1 has between 5-25 inbound links.

Say I successfully submit 30 articles, in theory, will I beat my competition.
How long will this take.

I have read that consistancy is key so I am going to be very diligant and continue my routine.

Should I get other backlinks besides article directories? Where?

    hello, Doing articles submission only not get your website rank higher, you want to work on other part too, like Social bookmarking, Profile creations on high page rank website, create blog, do press release and many other thing, and It's take time to come up on the google so be patient.

      You need to do a variety of things:

      * Social bookmarking
      * Article marketing
      * Use blogs on free blog hosts, use sites like weebly, hubpages, squidoo
      * Buy a backlink packet service and build those links

    Also I just checked my first site I was working on and it went from 3rd on google to non existant as far as serps. Whats up with that, the only backlinks I had for that site was forum posts, and blog comments. Is this why this happened?

      It happens from time to time, do not worry about it. Keep doing what you are doing and also apply additional backlinking strategies as mentioned above.

    Uh yes, you just don't want to rank high, you want to stay that way...googles likes quality content, content that is useful to your readers, and related to your topic
