Any International SEO Advice?

I was wondering if anyone had any international seo advice and how it works. For example, what do the google results show to people in australia? Is it the same results I see here in the U.S.? Do the place preference on .au domains? And how can I optimize my site to include targeting for other countries, or would it be better to just create a brand new site for this?

Any ideas? Suggestions?
