Ooh, I'm always pleased to see educational sites like that. The more the better.

It is bizarre, how many people know the words "finite" and "infinite" and know that there's no "a" in them, but for some reason when they want to use the word "definite", they put an "a" in it.

I also have a one-page site ranking in the same position. It's all in the off-page SEO.

Pages like that are actually pretty easy to get high PR on. It's one page and there are really no links on it. On most sites, they bleed PR to internally linked pages. In this case, any link they get is retained on the homepage.

I always had a hard time with that word. Along with calendar, separate, and wednesday.

On a related note, what's with all the grammar and spelling snobs online? Who cares if someone doesn't use "your" or "you're" correctly?

For some reason, people think it's ok to correct spelling in a condescending way. Yet they'd probably be offended if they got a pompous response on something they didn't know (or glossed over).

I have to disagree with you. When I see spelling and grammar mistakes on a landing page, it looks unprofessional, and I take my business elsewhere.

I'm not talking about a landing page. Usually it's people piping up on a message board or facebook.

Well, similarly to you OP, many other people around the internet are also linking to this site frequently.

Links from high PR pages = Increased PR of your page.

According to SpyGlass it has 3790 links.

Good point. That seems to be a big potential downside of having a melancholy temperament. For awhile, spelling errors used to bother me too, but now I ignore them unless it's on a sales page or something. There is really no benefit at all to being rude to someone over something so small as a spelling error.

So, how is building backlinks in order to improve PR and ranking different from the Googlebombings commonly associated with the keyword "miserable failure" a few years back? Now if you search for miserable failure you find an article discussing the matter.

I don't look for customers on message boards. But if you do, then you probably should watch your "yours and you're" usage. Other people probably don't care that much though...so neither should you.

So your beef is that they're doing the correcting in a snobby way vs. in a nice way. Sometimes it's a typo that's missed but sometimes it's obvious the person doesn't know the difference between you're and your or it's and it... I don't see what's so bad about helping them out. Especially in a business forum like this one.

Most people are not trying to help them out, they are trying to be a pompous a*s. It's not like they are writing a resume and asking for feedback....they are typing a message in a forum. Yet there are people that will take the time to correct their use of "your" or "you're".

Someone a few weeks back chimed into a thread about dashes in the domain name and whether it's good or bad. Instead of answering the question, they pointed out that those are not actually dashes...but hyphens. To me, that comes across about as tacky as if I were to say "Congrats on your $100/week. That's very good. Maybe you can get up to $10K per day, like me"

no matter how much info the site has or how valuable the site is, if the site has enough backlinks, it will have pagerank of its own. more backlinks from PR pages will increase a site's PR which must be the case for this site

Backlinks can get any piece of crap website a high Page Rank.

But this...this is definitely cool. Did I speel it right?

I've often wondered why though...when I pay some copywriter several hundred dollars to write copy for me, there's always one word spelled wrong. It's teh best copy?!

Your comments re the spelling of the word please me greatly. Know why?

Some time ago, I launched a thread on its spelling, and questioned why so many people have such a difficult time with it. It was spelled incorrectly on thread after thread and felt it was time to give people the right spelling.

I was surprised at the backlash I got for being so "picky" and a "grammar fanatic". And a whole lot more.

So thank you, people, for caring about the English language.

Regarding the OP's question, it also might be that this was an old domain that already had a high page rank. Someone bought it, changed its content and took advantage of the rank and any backlinks that had been created when it was owned by someone else.

If this is what happened, it'd be interested to know what was its content when the other person owned it.

Had I known it was available, I might have tried to grab it.... but I'd probably have to battle Alexa for it.
