last time i checked yahoo site explorer i had only 354 backlinks and this was earlier today, now i just check them and its at 509 links and the web page that i had these links point to went from position 17 to position 7 on the front page of google, these links are from auto backlink bomb i'm guess a run i did with this software just got indexed.

there you have it no-follow links really do work, if i was to do a little article marketing i would probably be number 1 in a week, this proves that a link is a link
#links #nofollow #work #wow

Just because yahoo site explorer reveals and counts them doesn't mean that the engines give 'em anymore weight SEO-wise... it just shows that the links exist.

Not saying whether or not no-follow links are ineffective, they may very well be (no clue on this myself), just saying that yahoo site explorer's link count is unrelated.

My 2 cents, no-follow do work to give your backlinks the needed variety to looks more natural in the eyes of SEs, imagine a 1k pages links to a specific page and all are do-follow! obvious spam! so, yes, they do work/do their job, variety!

i know for a fact that they work cuz the only backlinks pointing to that webpage was no-follow and it moved up 10 positions

do-follow? What the heck is that? There's no such attribute.

Natural? Nofollow was created to stop spam. Logic would hold,
a bunch of nofollow links would actually look like spam, not natural.

Take your nofollow links. They do nothing for rankings. They may lead to traffic,
      but not rankings.

Get 1,000 non nofollow links ASAP. There's nothing natural about nofollow.

Who the heck gives a rip about natural? Natural to what? To whom?

Natural to google... but I'm not sure why you think they don't matter? Just because some of the community thinks it is useless? I know of situations ranked by just nofollow backlinks.

DoFollow = links with NO NoFollow attribute!
One thing I love the most about this area (SEO) is what Barcelona said, no body really know! you'll try and error many mystery things and stick with whatever worked for you, for me, I tried what I said and it worked ok, if it did, then it works, if it didn't for you, then its not, just stick with whatever you tried and proved to be working the best!

No follow was created to stop spam for sure and that doesn't mean all the IBLs coming from no-follow links are spam. The SE algos especially of Google may have a sense that makes it feel that no-follow links are not spammy. A SE algo ranks a website with several hundreds of criteria, no-follow and do-follow will not have much validity for the SE excluding the flow of PR juice.

A mix of no-follow and do-follow will make the perfect combination suitable for high ranking. These are from my personal experiences.

        yes for the most part...

but its also used to tell google NOT to give the link any credit (link juice)... and if there are links that are not related on your page to your content, then nofollow is used.

nofollow also helps to fix page rank bleeding too, so you put nofollows on contact pages, privacy policy, etc, etc.

Very special understanding, really inspired. Maybe this explains why some websites with only few backlinks stll rank very well.

true, but its just a way to explain it in terms of a link that doesnt have a no-follow on the link.
Why, because you listen to what everyone else has said without trying your own thing?

Not true, the only thing google has said about nofollow links is that they don't pass rank... that is all... and even that is up for debate.

I don't believe page rank really flows throughout a site like some think. The panda update I don't believe was just about low relevant content, I believe it took away the page rank bleeding over from the home page or whatever high pr pages there might have been. Which is why link magnets aren't as powerful.

Me and you have gone back and forth about this I believe. Or is that a different Mike? One of my main sites is ranking pretty decent with hardly any dofollow links.

You can't possibly believe that links from wikipedia, twitter, and facebook are worthless in ranking? Those are all nofollow..

Will this issue ever be settled? Nobody knows, everybody thinks they know the real truth. Let me settle this once and for all. A link is a link. No follow links have no link juice, at the same time no follow links also increase web rankings somehow. There, now everybody's happy and nobody's happy. Life is full of contradictions.

I really believe too that the work (and have worked well for me too), in my opinion and probably to the search engines it helps to look less spammy. It helps to diversify too. It looks better to have some pr0-pr2 backlinks in addition to the pr4+...if you only have pr4+ backlinks that may look pretty spammy so some nofollow can't hurt either

Nofollow links are also good. There are some times the search engines do not obey nofollow rules and go ahead to the other sites in those links. Search engines treat them as dofollow.

Well, eventually Google should count no-follow links. A lot of the most organic links are no-followed like forum links. I guess you could consider no-follow links money in the bank for when Google finally finds a way to count forum links effectively, like counting different users from twitter and forums.

yep we will. because that wasn't a case study. its just a bunch of anecdotal statements made by the author. Like I said in another thread. experiments without any data are near worthless. Without the url, keywords and serp rankings its not a scientific case study.

its no different than me saying yes we ran a test on one of our domains and there was no movement. What was the keywords? Not saying. What was the domain? not saying.

Could there be other factors that caused the ranking? No but we are not going to show enough to get that verified.

People don't understand what a case study is. In science a case study that says here's what we found but we are not giving you any data to see is not scientific. If you are doing an experiment just to show if no follow ranks then why hide the URl , domain and keywords even when they are brand new untargeted domains? nonsensical

At any rate you a dead wrong. In order to prove something you have to show the actual data that proves your point not hide it from everyone else. There was no proof shown and it doesn't qualify as case study for that very reason.

I have no love of my position and it would be great to find that they do work but over the years of these claims I have yet to see a real case study with real proof.

There are lots of "valid" places you can get a no follow like, mostly social media sites etc.

I have always had better results mixing no follow with "do follow' links then just using "do follow" links.

After playing around so much, i think (personal opinion inc!) that google may mark down the value of "do follow" links if it doesn't see any no follow links. If they see no follow links (which would be natural), they they leave the value of the as they are (or might even increase the value of the "do follow" links).

that's my personal experience so far, and it's working, but in the end - there's many ways to skin a cat (as the expression goes!)

I did a case study comparing no-follow and do-follow. I discovered that for Google Rankings (not Bing/Yahoo) that they did little or nothing. Now, no-follow links will help for getting stuff crawled, but IMO will not increase your SERPs. In one of my tests I build 100 PR3+ (actual page PR, not domain) to a website that had been holding it's position steadily for several months. I didn't want to test on a new domain because they bounce up and down a lot. The result of the links was a decrease of 2 in Google, so really no effect.

I know people will just battle on here about how great no-follow links are and how natural they are, but the really no-follow links are not natural. Why? because most links on the internet are do-follow or truth regular follow links. Therefore, having a profile full of no-follow links is probably more spammy than only have do-follow links.

I can also assure you that many people here will post that no-follow links worked well for them, but do yourself a favor and actually test it for yourself on an aged domain. This is an extremely important part of your link building strategy and IMO you don't want to waste extra effort building links that don't increase your ranking or pass anchor text.

If you have really studied this... then you would realize the information you just provided is not nearly enough to analyze the situation. PR3+ links, care to show some of the pages? How many other outbound links were there after yours?

1,000 profiles links = 1,000 nofollow links = 1,000 newly created web 2.0 accounts = 1,000 newly submitted articles on EZA or other article directories.

If you have backlinks on wikipedia, twitter, facebook and other high authority websites, you would know the power of some nofollow backlinks.

Now you say it isn't natural to have nofollow backlinks... that is the biggest load of BS I have heard in a while. In fact, if you have a manual review on a site, and you have all dofollow backlinks, that is bad news for you since it is definitely NOT natural to have all dofollow backlinks.

Regardless, it would be stupid to only go for nofollow backlinks, or just dofollow backlinks. Variety is good... just like you shouldn't have all profile backlinks, or all blog comment backlinks... split it up.

      Hi Samual,

Please allow me to disagree slightly with your assertion. While nofollow links will not be included in Google's link graph, you go too far asserting that "no follow links will never helps you in getting ranking." "No follow links only helps you in getting traffic."

True, there is no direct benefit, however there can be a very positive indirect benefit. If you create highly useful content you still have a problem of getting that content discovered by users of the Worldwide Web. As you said, nofollow links can be useful for generating traffic, which when combined with quality useful content will lead to natural backlinks, the kind that search engines value the most.

Useful content + human traffic = natural backlinks + higher SERP rankings
