Creating a solild backlinking plan for at least a 2-4 weeks, you can make this plan you and completely individual.

Use web 2.0, video sharing, SB, RSS, Pingler and press release sites. These are the links mostly valued by Google, and by creating a plan for 2-4 weeks to do them every day, you will see improvements significantly.

All of the above mentioned link building methods work. I would use a mix of a few methods and be consistent. You typically need to build links regularly for at least 1 month (more if your keyword is competitive) to see any results.

Build a blog network of 1000 sites all hosted on separate c class IP addresses (will cost you close to $500 a month in hosting fees). Also make sure that each domain is privately registered and that you do not install Google Analytics on any of them. The idea is to eliminate as many footprints as you can to protect against crawlers ever discovering the relationship between your sites. It's also a good idea to use as many different themes on the sites as you can as well. You want diversity.

-Increase your brand awareness.

I would say no one method is best

Looking at it from Google's perspective it would look a little unnatural if you only have one type of link. So you need a decent spread to look natural

There are some great suggestions here, try a little bit of everything - you'll soon find your site climbing.

For example I launched a site in December (Amazon aff site), did blog comments, some .EDU links, some social bookmarking, web 2.0 linkwheel over the last 5 weeks and am upto #28 for a high volume search term. I have some video and articles still to do and should be on the first page by Feb/March

BTW this is EASY to do, I pay people $5 at Fiverr and get each one done, so for under $60 I'll have a first page site on Google. But you can EASILY do this yourself. Just be consistent....don't give up!

This seems to be one of the most overlooked simple strategies around.

Have a look at any of the guru's blogs. I'm sure they don't spend countless hours attempting to get crappy backlinks or even outsource it. Instead you'll find that create incredible content that gets distributed online and many other blogs (their sheep followers) then link to that blog post. It all starts with incredible content. Once you've got that out of the way you are well on the way to a high ranking website.

Sure, you'll need backlinks of course but not false xrumer or scrapebox backlinks that get lost after a week or two.

Do you think Frank Kern checks out Fiverr daily to read the reviews on the xrumer backlink guy to see if he should get 5,250 backlinks to his site from random websites?

Spend your time creating killer content. Post equally impressive content on the major article directories and I'm pretty sure you'll be fine.

An article on an authority website is huge (ex. techcrunch, mashable). Most of the other methods can be time consuming and often yield results that are less than expected. You need a link on an authority site to really get somewhere.

The best backlink strategy is having

HOME PAGE LINKS on good PR sites with low nr. of outbound links, theme relevant sites.
PERIOD.

All other, Comment posting, profiles etc.. are TRASH.

I see this very often analyzing competing and extremely well ranked sites. They have links on related niche sites. Here also links within blog posts/articles possible also higher valued than links on the blog-roll.

Yes, trash-links have value...but i think they cant beat such links...it would need 1000s of trash/comment links to get what a handful of authority links can do.

So..if i had the choice in doing link building...i would without a doubt prefer some blog network with somewhat older sites over profiles/comments etc. any day. The latter only to make it look more natural, probably not even needed.

Social Media is really great, building up your profile, becoming a top user, getting friends, writing good linkbait. None of these come easy.

If you get to the front page you get a good number of links usually, depending on your subject. Also, the page where your link is listed can become a PR4-5 on Digg.

Well what you essentially want is links from pages that have a high page rank. I use a keyword tool to find blogs which have this and then just leave comments. Not spam mind you, worth useful comments.

I just did a press release and submitted it to around 30 free press release sites. I'm really impressed with the results. Obviously the first benefit is a google front page listing within the first hour or so in the news section (doesn't last forever) and then over time the number of sites that pick that PR up is incredible.

Press release and article submission are 2 brilliant link building strategies that last a long, long time.

Imaging spending 1 week building mass submitted links that either don't get indexed or just get deleted (forum profile links for example) versus writing a good handful of articles, spin them, submit to top 20-50 directories and then create a handful of press releases.

It goes without saying that 2 years down the track, many of your well written articles will appear on the front page of google and will still provide a drip feed of people to your site.

Quality really does pay.

There are many ways to build back-links as hell0world mentioned, however, you should to do something which is helpful and useful for your site. Personally, I'd prefer back-links who gives me more targeted audience in terms of sales growth.

Does anyone use Article Directories on there websites anymore and if yes, what type do you use. Do you know of a good one that works with Wordpress and where you have to accept the articles that you place on your website. Also, does anyone use Linking software/plugins on there websites for Wordpress. If yes, again please let me know which one you use and how easy is it to use. I have lots of people who want to link to my website, but don't have a link plugin. I was using link machine, but it doesn't work in Wordpress.

some of the best ways are already stated above by many experienced users here:
1 : Forum Posting
2 : Blog commenting
3 : Article submission
4 : Youtube (other video sharing sites marketing)
5 : Social media bookmarking (facebook, twitter, digg, stumbleupon)
6 : Link Exchange
7 : Classified posting
8 : if you have deep pockets then make a network on sites (must be hosted on different I.P addresses)
