Do spammy comments help in SERPS

Obviously comments which are off topic prevent a good flow of discussion in the comments section of a blog, but what do they do to the SERPS. Is it worth approving more offtopic comments on a low viewed page. Will more comments help that page rank better in the SERPS?

I have a similar problem with one of my sites. I decided that as long as it's not total spam I will approve it. Firstly, it makes your site look more popular to new visitors, and at the end of the day it is adding fresh content to your site each time. As long as it's not negative I can't see the harm in approving it.

spammy comments are not much beneficial but they do effect SERP's somewhat.

The only benefit of having comments on your blog is that it does make your blog look more popular and visitor friendly. I hate blogs that have ZERO comments on like all their posts... They should just delete the comment string from their code...

You probably will not have either positive nor negative SERP results... Although having active, recent comment posts may give you a boost if someone does a Discussion or Blog search in Google.
