How profitable can a forum be?

I've heard mixed reviews about the profitability of owning a popular forum. On one hand, with thousands of members, you are guaranteed a consistent traffic source. However, it would seem that most of your members are there to socialize, not click your links or buy your products.

Obviously, forums drive new content and more search engine hits.

Has anyone had any success with "forum marketing"? I'd love to hear your thoughts.

Take a look at this forum. There was a post on here last week about it being worth over $5million. If you run it correctly like this one is it can be very profitable. There is loads of traffic here which means good content. The admins make sure there is no spam, which keeps the real people coming back. That then allows them to offer advertising and other benefits. If you use this forum as a model, you could do well.

Thanks for the information. I will keep everyone posted as to how it's going. I have a small forum of dedicated WordPress users, some friends, others who signed up after finding my blog on google. I'm hoping that over time the number of registered users will grow exponentially.
