Market Samurai vs Google Keyword Tool Search Volume Results

I've been using Market Samurai for quite a while now and find it one of the most helpful tools i've ever been able to use. However, i do have one major problem that i would like to know the answer to.

It's very simple actually: For some keywords, Market Samurai gives me a higher search volume number than the google keyword tool. I find this very strange because MS uses data from the google keyword tool, and now i don't know who to believe offcourse..

I can illustrate this with an example. Fire up both Market Samurai and the Google Keyword Tool and set both to Exact Match and Monthly. Now enter the following keyword and analyze them: 'free tattoo designs for men'

Market Samurai tells me the keyword has a monthly search volume of 880 for exact match, while the Google Keyword Tool tells me there are 0 monthly searches. To make it even more confusing, go to Google Insights and enter that same keyword, you'll see that there are actually people searching for this keyword phrase.

I've uploaded some screenshots so you don't actually have to do the research, since i don't meet the minimum post count to add links/images, i had to change the URL's, making it a bit harder for you guys. Just copy/paste in your browser and you should be fine, you don't have to add anything

Google Insights Screenshot:

As you can see both keyword tools are set to 'Exact Match' and 'Monthly', so this couldn't be the problem. Also, i would like to add that i'm not logged in to my adwords account with the Google Keyword Tool, as this sometimes changes the search volume results.

Who should i believe? I would tend to believe Google, but then again, how does it come that google insights shows me that people DO search for this term, while their Keyword Tool tells me the exact opposite?

I'm getting 880 coming up in Google keyword tool.

Sounds like a temporary Google glitch, or something to do with your (dutch?) setup

    Thanks for the reply Liam.

Yep, i asked about this on another forum and all members there were getting the same results both in MS and Googles Keyword Tool so the problem is on my side. I cannot figure out how to change this though, as i'm not logged in to my google account and even using different browsers (firefox, safari) doesn't solve the problem. Only makes me think google knows far too much about me

At least now i know who to trust, until i solve the google problem i just use market samurai for my keyword research. Only pain in the a*s is that MS's export to excel function isn't working as it should...

Congratz on your guess, it's a dutch setup indeed.

      Hi Chris,

I think I found out what your problem is. In the Google keyword tool you have to select "additional options", I made a screenshot to illustrate where to click exactly. http://img638.imageshack.us/img638/5025/kwri.jpg

Yeah, mine is also no set to english...^^

However, there you have to select english as your language if you do keyword research for english terms. By default this is set to your country's language and since there are probably hardly any searches for that exact keyword from users having google set to dutch language, the keyword tool showed a "-" instead of those 880 global exact match searches.

I hope I could solve your problem.

      Best regards,
