I hear so much talk of the importance of natural link building but I'm never sure what is it or how you do it. I certainly have my ideas about it. But what are you doing to get these precious links?

I think natural link building is when it looks natural with building a few links each day - rather than purchasing a link building service that would build thousands of links within a couple of days - that doesn't look natural.

Also, natural link building occurs when people use your articles and link back to your site. These might be articles from Ezine Articles that include your resource box with a link to your site. This happens naturally without any effort on your part (apart from writing good articles that people want to use).

The two things that signify 'natural' links to me are:

    > Getting them is an ongoing process, with the links being built over time.

    > There is variety to the links, in source, type, numbers, anchor text, etc.

Pulling an example out of thin air, how natural would it look to have 10,000 member profiles, created on the same day, all located on PR7 .edu sites, all linking to the same one-page, unrelated splog using the same anchor text?

I'm not so much talking about the "appearance" of natural links. I'm talking about truly naturally created links where people put them there without any prompting by you in some campaign. Does this even exist anymore? How can this situation be created?

It is okay to contact me! I have been developing software since 1999, creating many popular products like phpLD.

You know what? I've gotten so accustomed to getting to natural linking by way of the appearance route, it's become reflex.

It does exist. You create the situation by creating content with value people want to spread, just because it's valuable content.

Bill Platt has a thread on one facet of this here:

[Did anyone notice that this is exactly the kind of natural link under discussion here? ]

Natural linking is introduced by intentions like 'Get more of [page topic]', 'See also this [page topic related] relevant stuff', or in the best case 'Do not miss out on this [page topic] site'. Natural links appear in road maps (navigation) and recommendations (within the body text). Natural linking extends a topic to a broader theme and vice versa. Natural links are visible and prominent.
