The Rule of The Square

by Charles on January 15, 2011

The rule of the square. This, of course, is an elementary position, but it will do for our purpose. There is a quick way of calculating whether your passed pawn will be caught or not. This is the square rule. The white pawn on a4 draws a diagonal ending at the last rank and lifts up a side up to the rank it's on. Therefore, the square of the a4-pawn will have points a4-a8-e8-e4. If the black king enters this square, he stops the pawn. If not, the pawn is promotable. If it was Black's turn here, he draws after either ...¢e7, ...¢e6 or ...¢e5. However, when it's White's turn, the pawn's square gets smaller very quickly: 1.a5 Now the square, in which the black king must be, has points a5-a8-d8-d4, which is out of reach. In this perticular example, the square rule is practically irrevelent because of the simplicity of the position. But if you were looking to receive such a position after a 5 move trading combination, you might want to make sure that you don't have to count another 5 moves down the line, before figuring out whether it's worth it or not. 1-0

Do you have a link with this? Ok, just saw it...Oh, I see what you mean now.

But you are explaining it twice for nothing, bottom part is ok only, write something slightly different at top, you could simply spin it.

    Take care,

    Bernard

Add in some image or embed a video to make it more "unique" and it is also a little short...

I use bloghatterv3 (.com) which does this fantasticallyand it's really cheap too but you need the plugins
