It's exactly what it is. What position would you like your ad to be
    listed?

Remember, if it's search, 1st page has a set number of ads, so if you bid
on a position lower, it will be on the next page, etc.

Keep in mind that if you are into this position preference, you need
to determine at which spot gives you the most clicks. I think you
can find this out looking at your average position you get when bidding.

There is a lot of other stuff to consider as well. If your preference is
high, let's say 3 or 4, but your QS sucks, your ad will never show.

You don't have to preference bid, and you certainly would not want
to until after you find your average position for your current bids and
    campaigns.

Your ad will appear at the highest position your bid puts it according to
your QS, which is what most I assume do. No preference.

8 may sound good, but in reality it's not great. You will probably
be competing with 10s. In effect, your ad will not show in position 1
anyway. You can eventually pump your score up by getting clicks.
So test, test, test as to what gives you the clicks. Adwords can
drive people crazy. Ad position is really all about the QS of your
fellow bidders. If they have a higher QS, they get to bid less for
higher positions. That drives adsense users crazy as well.

In effect, the whole position preference thing goes out the window.

I can only guess that some people love bidding on the first spot on
the second page, if that were possible to predict. So, if you do
position preference, set it in a wide range, not one position.
