Interesting On-Page SEO Keyword question!

What are your thoughts?

Using the dog training niche as an example...

If we do on-page SEO for say 'dog training new york' will the keyword 'dog training' be automatically optimised for?

I.e. if we were to structure an article, as we wanted a single URL that we could back link both 'dog training' and 'dog training new york' to - would it be better to do URL- and H1 tags/meta etc. for 'dog training new york' as it includes the other keyword? Or better to go after 'dog training' because this keyword is much more difficult to compete on?

In the same light would you recommend the plural over the singular as it contained the keyword?

Thanks!!!!

Are you going for dog training, or dog training new york?

Answer that, and you've answered your question.

If someone does a search for dog training, I doubt if a site with
dog training new york is going to show anywhere if the person
    searching is in Seattle.

And what if it did? What are the chances of getting a click?

If you do dog training in new york, you better go google maps
first, then stick with dog training new york as your primary
    target.

I did a search for dog training just now, and dog training los angeles
showed first. I assume because I am near there. Then a whole bunch
of google maps results, followed by more local websites on dog training.

Then I did a search like people would do if they were not looking for
dog training. I searched how to train your dog. No local, no maps, just
regular search results with a plethora of dog training tips.

When looking for keyword tweaks, you should do exercises like I just did.
In your case, I would now try the latter if I was not in new york.

If you are targeting dog training in a particular area, go for 'dog training new york' rather than 'dog training'.

You should focus on dog training new york because very unlikely someone from Los Angeles, even found your site and bring you any business.

What Google really looks for is targeting and relevance. The term dog training is a general term that encompasses the whole niche of training dogs.

If you want training for dogs by places, by breed etc, it becomes very specific. You are now going from more general to more specific. Naturally, Google will show results that are more specific in line with the nature of the search term.
