Linkbait means posting highly popular content so that people are desperate to link to it.

Or it could be a page which has high density of popular keywords and Automated content scraping sites publish your content with all the links.

Anyway it leads to link creation without any effort on your part.

It could be a blog post, a top 100 list, a sensational video etc.

If you are looking at Linkbait as an SEO purpose you need either

1) to be a well read site already - people need to find it to link to it!
or
2) promote it to a huge number of people within the niche in the hope they feel the need to respond to it.

This is where creating a network of 'friends' within a niche can be useful. Yes you are competitors but more often than not befriending people in the niche can lead to huge advantages

(interestingly enough befriending someone in my non-travel niche got me a very cheap honeymoon that we would have taken at full price! So there are side benefits)

Link bait (or linkbait) refers to anything on a website that encourages links from other websites. It can include content, online tools, downloads, or anything else that another site owner might find compelling enough to link to.
Link bait is important because most search engines use backlinks as a major factor in determining ranking.

It is such a content which other sites love to link because they feel that it should be linked and not because you are asking them to link it. Link bait helps to get more links to your website.This means it increases the chance of your website, getting high ranked by search engines

Link baiting can produce high-level contacts, which are not reciprocal, and are found in fact a number of sources. Social sites can provide this service. If you proceed with the creation of content, should be the authority on this particular issue and will get better rankings.

Who is taking drugs?" Material that attracts an almost guaranteed interest.

When I post link bait content on my sites it always leads to an immediate spike in organic traffic because I'm usually capitalizing on a topic that people have VERY strong opinions about.

Case in point: Post something at a blog or website about Sarah Palin. Watch thousands of people show up overnight, even if you're posting it on a completely new blog that nobody has found yet. I did this on a simple free Wordpress blog, just for ****s and giggles really,and had about 3000 visits in a day or so.

You use link bait type posts to create interest in your site. A lot of that traffic won't convert to buy your product, but some might sign up for your list, and some of those folks will eventually convert and become buyers.

We live in a society that gets VERY bored. Try to grab their interest with something controversial -- don't be afraid to make ENEMIES as well as win FANS -- and that's link bait.

Link Baiting means to create something that naturally attract backlinks for your web page by getting people to talk about it, discussing it on forums, blogging and linking to it from their sites. It also attracts a lot of visitors.

Link bait isn't new lol! Back in 1998 when I was playing around as a teenager I got an article posted on a big site which drew tons of traffic. It's all about buzz, create something that people want to talk about and share and you've got link bait. Takes a tiny bit of creativity but the possibilities are endless.

The term “linkbait” is used to describe content on a website which is designed to generate incoming links from other sites. Some people disagree with the use of this term, since it sounds pejorative, implying that all linkbaiting is bad, while other people think that the term is perfectly accurate, even with the negative connotations associated with the word “bait.”

Link bait is a type of link exchange in which high negotiations take place in exchanging links. In the link bait a high quality link is exchanged in return of different services or high quality link or it can be anything that takes to get a quality backlink.
