Hey guys,

I have a few questions. Everywhere I read I am told to find a good niche and also find a domain that matches it. It is best to have a domain that is exactly "keywordphrase".com with out any words in between, before, or after the keyword phrase.

My first question is, based on your experience, if I were to find a keyword phrase that pulls in let's say 30,000 searches monthly for "awesome product".

If I would to get a domain that is either awesomeproductreview.com, awesomeproductcomparison, etc etc., how much would that hurt my chances at success? I understand this may be difficult to answer but I wouldn't mind some discussion.

My second question is, let's say I find a good keyword however it is fairly competitive, but still quite a bit of searches monthly. Let's say 100,000 a month. However, the sub-keyword phrases are less competitive but with less searches, let's say 8,000 - 15,000 a month. Does it make sense for me to purchase the domain of the competitive keyword, if it is possible, or a variation like talked about above, and then concentrate on ranking with the subdomains. Pages would be "competitivekeywordphrasewithvariation".com/"lesscompetitivesubkeyword".

My simple understanding would be that even though there would be less searches coming through the sub keywords, all of my other sub-keywords are so closely related that the conversion rate would be higher, and the cumulative searches of each sub-domain would add up to a respectable amount. Let's say I have 10 sub keywords drawing 10,000 monthly, I capture a respectable 20% of each for a total of 20,000 collective hits a month.

Just to give a better example let's pretend my niche is "dog fashion". Monthly searches are at about 100,000 and the only domain I can get is either dogfashionreview.com or bestdogfashion.com. Now let's assume that "dog skinny jeans", "dog toupes", "dog fedoras", "dog suspenders", etc bring in 8,000 searches monthly each and I'll focus on 20 of these sub-keywords. Total searches among all subkeywords are 160,000. Let's say I get 20% of these total searches to my website. That leaves 32,000 total searches.

Is it reasonable to assume that I could rank high with a sub-keyword under the model of "competitivekeyword+".com/"subkeyword"? Or would it be better to have multiple websites focused on these very small subkeywords?

Sorry if I rambled alot, I hope you guys understand what I'm saying.

    You've got some good ideas. It is RECOMMENDED that you do the EMD (exact match domain) with a .com .org .net whatever... Use hyphens if you want to... The SERPs don't care.

    I like subdomains - I also like subdirectories. If you get a totallyawesomedomain.com just use subdomains or subdirectories. They are just as easy to rank for. mydomain.com/my-long-tail-keyword/ works just as good as an EMD and you would rank that page the same way you would for an EMD. Master your On- and Off-site SEO!

    If you go for low competition you should hopefully rank relatively easily on page ONE. For higher competition, obviously, it will take much more work to get to page one or the top 3, but the traffic would probably be worth it. Most people focusing on "Micro Niche Adsense Sites" go for easy ranking for OK traffic. It's up to you what you want to do.

    You could build multiple sites for low traffic/competition search terms vs. one competitive search term that gets 10x the monthly searches. It will be harder to rank, but you will reap the rewards

    CHEERS!

    P.s. This might not make sense I was typing this and multi tasking!!

    I wouldn't sweat the domain thing too much.

    Go short if you can and go .com if you can, but in the end it's really about the content growth on the domain (or sub).

    You can make a domain like this succeed;

    kjsdfglndskhdfgds.com

    If the content is good.
