I'm looking working on getting high PR backlinks and I'm wondering if sites like MySpace and Facebook are dofollow links. I just made a blog entry on myspace with a link in the body of the post. What I'm wondering is whether Google will give weight to the link.

Same with Facebook.

They're nofollow. You won't get any link weight from Myspace, Facebook, or twitter. However, you could get some traffic.

How do you find out if sites are using dofollow links?

If you use Firefox, you just have to right-click anywhere on a page and click the "NoDoFollow" line, which then shows the links up in different colours on the page. I think it used to be a "Firefox add-on" but seems now to be built in to the software itself.

I don't look at them, myself, because for me no-follow and do-follow backlinks seem to have the same value (according to how context-relevant the sites are, the PR, the number of links on the page, and all the usual stuff, of course), and it just isn't relevant to me one way or the other.

OK I'm reading your post in FF and when I right click the page I don't see the NoDoFollow option in the menu.

I suspect that either your version of Firefox may not be the most current one, or you need to download the "NoDoFollow add-on". (It was included in my latest automated update, but I'm wondering now if that might have been because I already had it installed in a former version?). You can have mine, if you come and collect it: I don't use it, myself.

        If you have firefox,
        1. instal SEO for firefox. It will appear at the bottom right of your screen.
        2. Now open a blog or website that you want to find out if it's a "dofollow", or "nofollow"
4.Right click the SEO for firefox plugin (located on the bottom right corner of your screen after installtion)
5.Click the 'highlight no follow link' this will highlight no follow links in red.

        hope this helps.

Twitter and Facebook are nofollow, but Google has recently started applying some weight to the links based on the activity and content of the profile.

It's stupid and completely backwards against their policies, but they have openly admitted to crawling and counting these links. They have to because the links are very important, regardless of the nofollow attribute.

Crawling and indexing are completely different than passing PR or "counted" as a link.
Obviously, some facebook pages are not even crawled, and that flash would be a
        major stumbling block.

But twitter is the 800 pound gorilla when it comes to google and its tweets.
It is nofollow, but tweets show up in SERPs regularly.

One can only wonder as to what weight google gives to urls in tweets, but
they are certainly not ignored. Or at least blindly ignored.

Weight does not always have to refer to PR.

The funny thing is when we find the lists of dofollow links often the paged are junked up with link nobody ever follows, and so diluted that the SEO benefit is next to nothing.

That's why I have to smile when people ask for high PR backlinks on any forum.

A PR6 backlink page with 300+ links on the page isn't the same as a PR6 with say 10 outbound links.

I tell them how to find links on their own (step by step), I think most folks just can't be bothered to do their own research, who knows?

This is what Alexa is talking about. I have this add-on for Firefox too. Any time you want to right click on the background of the page you're visiting and select "NoDoFollow"

To turn it off just right click and select "NoDoFollow" again!

I use a plugin for Chrome that does the same thing (shows nofollow) plus a few extras.

Chrome is a lot faster than Firefox, I think SeoQuake slows down FF, I run SeoQuake on Chrome & it doesn't bog down the page loading.

Or just use the firebug addon for firefox. Right click on any link and choose 'Inspect element'. You will see if the rel="nofollow" tag has been added to the link or not.

Both MySpace and Facebook and nofollow, but they can bring your site TONS of traffic. A nofollow link can still help you increase your search engine placement, though. If you're lookign for a firefox addon, I suggest going over to SEObook.com and signing up for their tutorials. You can learn a lot there, PLUS you will be able to download 3 awesome firefox extensions that will make everything you do a lot easier. One of which allows you to find nofollow links on pages.

You won't get any link weight from Myspace, Facebook, or twitter as all are giving nofollow links. However, you could get some traffis. And Myspace, Facebook and tweeter is great for creating your social network and can help you to promote your brand as well.

Yes, you can get link weight even though they are nofollow. Google has admitted to crawling and adding a ranking factor to sites like Facebook and Twitter. There may even be other nofollow sites they are paying attention to that they haven't publicly admitted to yet.

Read my previous post and learn to scroll up before posting.
