SEO - Search Engine Optimization is the process of improving ranking in search engine results.

Now a' days, most SEOs like to break it down into On-page and Off-page optimization. Off-page techniques aren't really SEO, but since it does improve a websites ranking in SERPs they are easily able to get away with calling it that. Personally, I call this promoting your website because that's what it is. In fact, any type of website promotion that brings quality targeted traffic to your site will tend to generate natural backlinks (the best kind) and improve your SERP results.

What many SEO folks don't realize is that Off-page techniques often bring more traffic directly to their website, bypassing the search engines all together. It's a bit of a stretch to call this SEO when search engines are not even a part of the traffic source. Even so, it's a generally accepted as part of SEO.

There is another area of search engine marketing that many SEOs overlook, particularly those that tend to focus mainly on off-page marketing. That is the quality of their listing in the search engines. It's not much good to get a top listing if your listing turns most searchers off. What a waste of potential traffic.

You need to write compelling meta tags, both your title and description tags do all the heavy lifting when it comes to CTR for your search engine listing. This is something that PPC advertisers know all too well and many "SEO only" folks tend to overlook.

If you've kept up with the latest changes, you are aware that search engines, Google in particular, are using behavior metrics as part of their algorithm. This makes your organic listing CTR of paramount importance, yet how often do you hear of a "Professional SEO" consultant that is actually attempting to measure and track this metric?

Many website owners understand the importance of Time on site, average page views and bounce rates, yet how often do you see this as part of a SEO consultant's tactics?

Sure, you can use website promotion to generate lots of targeted traffic to your website, but if your NOT optimizing all aspects of the website for search engines, should it really be called Search Engine Optimization? Maybe we should call it "Search Engine Promotion" or better yet "Website Traffic Promotion" since so much of the benefit has nothing to do with search engine traffic.

Now don't get me wrong, there is a certain aspect to building backlinks that definitly IS SEO and that's the anchor text aspect of your backlinks. This should not be ignored, but if that is all you work on, then maybe it should be called semi-optimization.

To be optimal, you need to address all aspects of optimization, otherwise I think it only fair that we call it SSEO (Semi-SEO).

I guess the next question would be:

"How do you do SEO?"
