Profile Forum Links, Worth It?

Hey everyone,

I've heard a lot of positive things about profile links in forums, however people say profile links will only help if you ping all the profile links to get them indexed and then use a backlinking methods pointing to the profile links.

Anyway, I thought I try and test it.

So I got someone to create 4000 profile links for my websites and It's been 3 days now, and just yesterday I pinged all the profile links to see if Google could speed the indexing for all the profile backlinks faster.

So I checked the backlinks today and see that 6 profile links have been indexed out of the 4000 links.

But so far I haven't noticed any positive results using this method.

So can someone confirm if profile links work and if so, what the best method is to gain maximum power and backlinking juice from these kind of links?

Has anybody had some success with profile backlinks?

Thanks,
#forum #links #profile #worth

No... to me profile links are completely useless. Anything that doesn't generate traffic, is useless.

I have mixed feelings about forum links. I've stayed away from anything related to SEO for a long time but few months ago bought a WSO and followed the instructions to build a little local lead gen site.

I built a simple site with 3 posts, and paid for I think a 1000 links, and over a month or two the site gradually got to #5 with 1.6 mil competing. I would say that's pretty good, however I did terrible keyword research and chose an awful term that gets NO traffic!

Just checked using the "link:" operator in google search and I don't see any links pointing to the site currently, but for some reason it's still on the first page??

Fast forward a few months and I'm working on another site with 10x the searches and about a 1/3 of the competition and I'm bouncing around on page #4 right now. Purchased a total of 11,000 links from a few sources and right now I don't see any evidence of anyone linking to my page.

I have also done some profile links on .edu sites and am waiting before placing my URL there so I should know how those work out soon - but this is all new to me and overall I don't like the idea of making stuff up on someones forum just to get a back link there.

The 11k links were just done so hopefully they'll do a bit better over time, but right now I don't have the highest opinion of forum profile links.

    Steve

Rather than conceding they don't work I think it's worth considering the quality of the profile links obtained. What's the reputation of the service? get some recommendations and then check that service

That's a valid point and while my most recent test was from a WSO with many glowing reviews, I do think the .edu backlinks I'm working on myself will give me much better results than any mass linking service...if I can just be patient enough to get them in place and see them start working for me.

When creating profile forum links all the links will have a pagerank of N/A or 0 anyway, so quality will be same for every site I think or am I missing something here?

Quality will be at minimum as they all will be pagerank 0, however I think it depends on what you do yourself to increase the quality of those links.

And I personally think increasing the quality is the difficult part.

That sums it up perfectly. If you put time into your forum profiles by writing good posts that are in aged threads with some PR, it's worth while.

I started profiling about 3 months ago and I work hard to get them indexed and write good posts to insure they stay indexed. I go through and add a post a month for ever profile and they seem to stay indexed.

I have about 200, it has not change the SERP at all so far.

How can you make such a sweeping statement?

It depends on what keywords you are targeting and how many. If you are targeting one longtail then no, but if you are using profile links to rank for 1000 longtail keywords, then how can you say there's no traffic?

I use profile forum links as part of my overall SEO strategy and have them indexed. What most people fail to realize is you have to build backlinks to the backlinks - that goes for any backlink you are creating for any site of yours.

Just because you create backlinks doesn't mean Google will find them.

Another thing about Forum backlinks is that the profile pages are newly created, hence they do not have a PR of their own, just the main forum would have a PR. Signature links would be better in this regard but they must add value to the threads rather than look like spamming.

I'm also wondering if profile links work of recent.

I know of people who swear by it, I've seen hundreds of profile links reported in yahoo explorer for some of the highly ranked niche websites. I've got no doubt it's been working for a while.

However, I don't see results myself after 3 months of waiting.

    1. Google never shows all the links in your link profile.

    2. Why are people obsessed with getting links indexed. They dont need to appear in the index, they just need to be spidered.

I have a client who recently discovered he had a website he did not know about. Someone built it for him to prove they could do SEO, but then disappeared. I found the site when I was doing keyword research, it was on the first page of google (7th position) for his keyword (local, but still pretty competitive) and the backlinks - 53 were all forum profile links and blog comments. I would love to know more about the index/spider/cache issues I am reading about here. I am a designer moving more into SEO as a request from my clients and am in the process of developing my strategy and purchasing software for semi-automation. I do not understand the entire ping, RSS, cache cycle and I am trying to not waste time or money! Pinging my backlinks seems like a time eater.

The main thing here is,You get thousands of profile links but no increase in serp. But some simple 100 links will give you increase. when those profiles forums are visited by google properly and timely.so that your profile get indexed and your site get a boost.

So getting profile links from high profile forums will definitely give you increase.

      Oke,

Well, 1 week ago I had 4000 profile links created for 2 of my sites and then used pingdevice.com to ping all of my profile links.

So far, for both of the sites I can only see 8 backlinks from profile links. for both of the sites?

is there a way to get these profile links indexed faster? Or do I just let google crawl these pages in a natural way.

        Just a little update.

It's been almost 2 weeks now since I had 4000 profile links created and PINGED all these links using Pingdevice.

And so far google is showing 10 backlinks from these profile links, so thats roughly not even 1 % of the backlinks.

The interesting thing is that I'm ranking on the 5th page of Google for my keyword? So still mixed feelings.

If only I could get all the other profile links to get indexed, to really judge if profile links are still powerful enough to get websites to rank high.

Anybody know how long it takes to naturally get all these links indexed? I pretty sure that google will never index all the 4000 links, but I'll be more then happy if only 10 % of these links are able to be indexed.

You should start a thread and use this as a case study. I have never pinged a link, and eventually ranked everything I have touched. To me, pinging is like the kid in the back of the class jumping and raising his hand, yelling Oh! Oh! I know! Oh! (i.e. Horshack from Mr Kotter) You may get noticed, but after a while it becomes tiresome. Initially, it may look like a lot is going on at your website due to all the new links, but after a while...there isn't going to be much to talk about in Google's eyes, so I see any benefit of this as temporary at best.

I would suggest going witha Profile pyramid instead, you will get a much higher index rate of the first layer and some of the 2nd layer ones will also get indexed. Also check out many of the complex RSS techniques people use on some other forums. I have this one method which is a little tedious but has a great index rate. Its complex but here is a basic version of it, get a RSS feed for every 200-500 links. Host it on your server and make a link to it on a highly crawled blog of yours. I have a blog which gets 400 spiders daily with over 1k pages indexed, and have like 20 RSS feed links at the bottom which I rotate every week or two. Greatly increased indexing rates.

Edit: Look into mixed RSS feeds too. I do a complex method with mixed RSS feeds and High PR backlinks to RSS feeds. Basically if you take your time and do it right, I have seen people get 1-3 positions for EXTREMELY competitive keywords.

the thing about profiles is that they can be deleted or de-indexed when the forum owners make profiles private.

that said, it is probably quite effective. I have seen some sites rank very highly on profile links alone.

For those that don't know, double pass is creating a profile, and waiting at least a week before adding your link.

You want to wait until your name drops from the 'new members' list so less people get a chance to see your spammy profile of evilness

If you use ethical marketing and actually post useful content forum links are gold however if you just post a forum link and post either irrelevant content or no content then either it will be pruned or they will blacklist your ip. Many forums especially the high PR ones are catching onto this spam trend so be real and post quality the visitors will flow your way.

I watched a video from James Scholes recently where he explains this forum backlinking method and he says to use SEO Quake to sort the list of forums by the highest page rank so you put backlinks on the forum sites with a high page rank.

Is this irrelevant what he is saying then because a members profile page only has a PR 0 regardless of whether the site has a high page rank?

If you want to start seeing some benefits from those links, pick 20 of the forums, and start participating in them. Heck, a couple of posts a day for a couple weeks. But if this is just a one shot deal, i.e. the 4000 links created, then the effect will wear off. You have to keep building links.

I was very skeptical about profile links also - especially since the profile page has no page rank associated with it. But I've come around to them lately.

The key is finding someone who runs a good xrumer or profile backlinking service (they do the rss submissions, they do the double pass, they link the links etc. all for you).

In short yes profile links do work. I think it is necessary to take steps to get the link indexed.

Do I think there are other links that are more powerful than profile links?? Yes!

This does not mean that I am going to leave profile links out of my link building strategy though. Profile links are not as easy as they seem because you do have to take the extra time to get your links indexed.

Yes profile backlinks are harder to get indexed. And too many profile backlinks pointing at the same site within a short time could have negative effects.

A good way to get around this is to build profile backlinks to the profile backlinks in layers.

This passes more link juice, and gets many more profile backlinks indexed than the usual.

Just adding my .02. Am not an SEO guru.

Think forum post(links) can work well ... or not work at all. Depending on the person using them. If you post in forums related to your niche. Add useful and interesting comments then it could pay off for you. Even if it's just some good traffic to your site.

Would also say ... A person needs to be selective. Getting 10,000 trash links is going to waste your time. It's nothing but spam. The admins of those forums wont appreciate it. The users won't either and the mighty google algo wont as well.

Google's definitely not stupid. They recognize widespread automated trash links. They've made it pretty plain they don't like people who think they're slick and jam up their indexes with trash and spam attempts.

Think link building should be a well thought out and natural looking process, if you expect to get anything out of it. Link spam = trash in/trash out ( trash results ).

Google wants content that's relevant. They want the people searching with them to find what they want. To find quality results. The whole user experience thing you keep hearing about. 20,000 random forum links doesn't make you relevant. Makes you a spammer, at best likely to be ignored in terms of giving any benefit. At worst could get you the dreaded google slap.

Google has a license to print $$$. That's of course why they're so big about protecting user experience and weeding out the irrelevant results for users as much as poss.

Back in the day ... Believe this kind of wide spread linking worked. 30,000 links = must be a high status site we better note in our index for XYZ. But the search engines algo's have evolved to be smart enough to recognize link spam for what it is nowadays.

      jmo's.
