Social bookmarking and directory submission are ok. Directory submission work well. However, it takes much time to see the result of directory submission. It depends how much fee is. Moreover, you can use backlink with high PR.

It really depends on your situation. A very specific reply to your question as you have asked (IMHO) for it would be - Social Bookmarking.

Make sure you do not bookmark your own sites. If done by others from different IP addresses, it will be most effective.

As for directory submissions, the most powerful directories on the web that have some influence on your rankings are all paid ones and expensive. If you are looking at free directory submissions, it will be good to have a backlink profile from various domains but how much they will affect your rankings depends on the niche and other related factors.

i would choose social bookmarking for the start,you will get some backlinks and traffic but on the long run combination of a few methods would be better

Both have their own importance but I would prefer directory submission is still effective it is done in the right way, I try to submit different description for better result.

Directory submissions takes time before the approval unless you use paid directories, for still it is preferable to use Social Bookmarking the Directory Submission.

I do not think that we can compare. I mean both have different purpose and benefits. SOcial bookmark can get you instant hits and visitors where directory submission can get you permanent one way link which can increase your SERP

You don't want to hear this but, the answer is BOTH.

Both of them are the bases of a natural (and solid) process of indexation in the eyes of search engines.

Now the twist:

A friend of mine decided to do for himself all the manual work of "SEO". Guess what? He spent months doing (manual) directory submissions for his online shop. He didn't do a single social bookmark. Not one.

But his site ranks pretty high for a lot of keywords. Probably it's just a regional thing (Portugal) but fact is: just using world directories + local SE's submissions made the trick for his site.

I would personally go for Social Bookmarking. It seems directories are out of date, I never even heard of them before I was doing internet marketing.

Social bookmarks will also give you some traffic. And if you get some really unique and high quality content you can get a lot of traffic. If your content is truly exceptional.

Why can't / won't you do both?

If you're just looking to get indexed, I'd say go with social bookmarking on the big sites (digg, stumpleupon, delicious, etc) as well as possibly some links from big social media sites (facebook). This will get the spiders on your site as quickly as anything else.

However, if you're looking to get ranked and have good SEO, then that is a totally different ball game, and unless you're going after a KW that has virtually no real competition, then you'd better add a lot more tools to the mix.

The question should probably be quality social bookmarking service versus a quality directory submission service.

I'd choose the directory submission over s. bookmarks just because I've seen faster results with them. But they can both work great if you do it right.

directory submissions, I pay $120 for 9000 directories and I pay $10 for 125 bookmarks. Outsource that stuff kids, your time should be worth more

To get more backlinks, you must do social bookmarking because in social bookmarking both home page and inner page are cached by a Google but in directory submission, only home page is cached.

Both are equally important..I have done both on my sites and it works well.. SEO should be a mix of different types of links..Along with this if you want extremely great results do write content in the form of articles and press releases..I really works..Google is hungry for content..remember this..

do none of those...directories dont count hardly nowadays and social bookmarkings are not strong links..you need more trusted links and from sites that have real value in google...anyone can get those social bookmark links so the value is therefore not so high. Google knows ppl abuse it which is why the links are weak..you need more robust seo strategies..

Social Bookmarking for two reason, although there are not much social bookmarking sites which are do follow, mean lesser in number as compare to directories, but still their link count more as directories link is very very deep if it is free, so focusing on directories is not of any use. 2nd Social bookmarking sites helps in getting good traffic, especially if you have a good social network, you can utilize it in bookmarking for voting.

Both are good for linkbuilding. If you want links fast then you have to use social bookmarking instead of directory submission. Social bookmarking takes some days time but directory submission takes more time to accept site.
Social bookmarking is best to index your site in big G fast instead of directory submission.

Both methods are important if you want to diversify your link building campaign, since you can't put all your eggs in one basket. But, I think directory submission is better than social bookmarking submission. Because the link that you get from social bookmarking tend to be no-follow.
