Interesting newbie questions on Google ranking!

Hi everyone!

Well about a week ago i made my first affiliate product site live and submitted my sitemap to Google and Bing, created a few social bookmarks and submitted my feed to Yahoo.

SEO is not my strong point, so reading lots of good threads here on WF to try and help! I need a good ranking to get visits and hopefully purchases!

I haven't done much off-page SEO yet as you can see from above, but have noticed the following -

1. If I type my main keyword into Google with quotes around it, my site comes up in 5th place on page 1. (41,000 results)

If I type this keyword into Google without quotes, my site is at the top of page 18! (547,000 results)

Is this because I need backlinks?

2. In webmaster tools, Google says it's indexed one page of my site (home page) - why hasn't it indexed the others? They are all in the sitemap and linked to from the homepage

My site is in Wordpress, my main keyword consists of 4 words (longtail?) and my domain name is only a month old and is my mainkeyword.org

Thanks for any guidance!

Regards,
Mark

Do some off psge SEO i.e. link building, social bookmarking, etc. Spread your link through the Internet.

For indexing my sites branch URL, always I share my new link to the high PR popular social networking site. I does a great work.

Many factors go into site ranking. I've noticed the biggest impact from backlinks (high quality) and building page rank.

Of course you don't to build links to quickly because google will sandbox your site which is very frustrating. A nice slow backlink campaign does the trick in most cases. Again, only if the links are high quality. No link farm type links.

  • Don't just trust a report. Take your actual long tail URL... search it. It if shows up in Google then it's indexed.

Get your On Page Optimization in order BEFORE you work on Links.

And remember while linking... you get one shot to get your Anchor Text correct. You can seldom go back and change it later. Do it wrong and you've wasted your effort.
