I usually don't use it for exactly this reason. I have tried it a nubmer of tiems, but i actually find it easier and less time-consuming to do it by hand ratehr than use MS.

I use micro niche finder most of the time or Jack Duncan's software.

What part of it?

I only use it for the SEO Competition and its fine. Takes like 30 seconds but thats still pretty fast considering it uses and changes proxies during that time.

One of the slowest elements is simply going from one tabbed keyword to the next. It can sit on "Loading Keyword Research Data..." for ten minutes. Or just going from the SEO Module back to the Keyword Module can take forever.

It used to be intolerably slow for me, but since getting a new computer - a Lenovo Thinkpad X201 laptop, with 4GB RAM and Windows 7 64-bit - it really flies, and I've had no issues with hanging, crashing and whatnot.

Market Samurai is undeniably quite a slow piece of software (although I think that's mostly the fault of Adobe Air, as so is every other piece of software I've used that's built on this), but the effects of this can be minimised significantly if you run it on a good computer.

You could get a pig in a wheelchair to run sprints with that piece of hard ware.

I am looking to replace and upgrade all my hardware.

It's a very nice laptop: very fast and stable - absolutely no issues with it so far at all - and perhaps most important of all, it's very ruggedly built.

Simply no contest between this and every other computer (desktop or laptop) that I've ever owned. Wholeheartedly recommended.

My understanding is that this exact configuration is supposed to cost around £1250 GBP in the UK ... so by no means cheap. Lenovo was running a promotion of 15-20% off when I bought it, though, and coupled with a voucher code I had, I managed to get the price down to about £930 GBP - so I made quite a substantial saving.

I've owned it about 6 months now, and used it every day, and I'll say that I'd easily have paid the full price for it, too, without any hesitation.

Extremely slow for me. I'm running it on a quad core processor, 6gb ram, and it drives me nuts all the time.

Oh well, it's good at what it does, so I just do something else while I wait.

I don't find it slow at all for the amount of "work" it does. The only times that perhaps it glitches is when it is doing rough research, but by simply checking off the SEOTC it works faster (SEOC + SEOTC together, on a list of more keywords it does slow down my connection and sometimes it stops even working, but when I check off one of the two it works fine, once the first data is collected it works fast even to get the SEOTC).

For the other performances, I do find it OK (not super light fast, but its still a reasonable amount of time that it takes).

The slow part isn't when it's doing its work. It's BETWEEN functions. Going from keyword tab to keyword tab for example, the loading time is intolerable. Or going from module to module. Once I'm in the keyword or module it works slow, but o.k.

I tend to find MS is extremely slow with more than 3 or 4 keyword tabs open. It seems to really slow down after after. My approach is to segment my keywords into different projects once I hit the 3 or 4 keyword "limit". Doing keyword research it's really easy to get carried away and have dozens of tabs. Segmenting into separate projects is a bit of a pain but it makes MS very usable - it must be OK because I've bought it!.

It is slow, I just upgraded to a quad core i5 with 4 gigs of ram and windows 7-64. It is faster than it was on my single core XP system, but still not setting any speed records.

I have a souped up machine and it's still sluggish. If you open up an explorer window in your data dir, you'll see that it writes a '.journal' file EVERYTIME you switch tabs. I think it's doing some sort of backup. It's really inefficient. Make sure your datafile is on a local drive.

That being said - it's a great tool. I wouldn't trade it!

Runs pretty fast for me, everything takes about 15 - 60 seconds. Although I do have a $4k rig (12GB ram, i7 overclocked, etc.. etc...)

I used to be heavily into gaming so it came with the territory. Now it fits perfectly with internet marketing.

When you are analysing 100 keywords, it really isn't that fast. Cross-platform combatibility comes at a cost.

I'm using the Google Keyword Tool more and more these days. Use it do your initial research and then import the potential winners across to MS for competition analysis.

  Ok, so I've done a little more research...I don't know exactly what the problem is but here are some interesting finding:
  
  - The data is being stored in a SQLite DB. You can actually browse the data structure if you want. Go to "sqlitebrowser dot sourceforge dot net" as I can't post links yet. Open your .msam file and you can peek inside.
  
  - Multiple "big" keywords (ie those with 800 suggestions) seems to start slowing down the datafile very quickly. This would explain why it happens to some people and not others. If I'm researching "small" keywords, with small results, it's going to be quicker than big keywords with a lot of data.
  
  - I started a new project and it was small until I hit some 800 related KWs...SEO competition...then it started to grow and that's when things slowed down.
  
  - The data file caches everything - even deleted keywords. If you delete a KW and then create it again, all the data is still there. So, if you get a big KW, then delete it, then try another one, then delete it, etc, the DB file grows and the performance gets pretty bad.
  
  - I think @PaulChester is on the right track. The fewer keywords you open tabs for, the less junk is stored in the DB file and therefore, the faster it goes.
  
  - My previous comment about the journal file was being rewritten every time may or may not be true. It's very noticeable when the data file is 20+MB and might be happening it's just going too quickly on smaller files.
  
  - There doesn't seem to be a good index on the DB - the big data is being serialized and stored in a single field. I would think the MS guys would be able to build some DB indexes and that would solve a lot of the problem but I'm not on their dev team so I can't really give programming suggestions. I would also clear out deleted keywords and compact the DB. At least that way, the datafile will always be as fast as possible without lots of junk littering the fields.
  
  So, my recommendation to MS user is to do as Paul says - use multiple smaller files. Just know that if you hit a "biggie," your data file is touched permanently and performance will probably start to slide significantly. Hopefully the MS team can make some changes so we don't have this issue.
  
  And again, all that being said, the amt of time MS saves EASILY outweighs these annoyances. But hey, constant testing, feedback and improvement = success.

here some tips for you that using MS.
Use Google Keyword Tool to find out your keyword first.
Then, use MS to analyse that keywords.
Use golden preset to get some ideas whether it's profitable or not.

Keyword research is tedious work. If you have extra money, outsource others to do it for you.

Runs great for me on my old 2G Dell D620 even with a encrypted hard drive. My internet connection matters a lot when getting data. Some hotels have sloooooow connections and I just can't work from there.

However, I think Paul may have the answer. I create separate projects for my keywords and never have more than 2-3 keyword tabs open. Maybe that's the key to this issue.

Thanks for the input. You're right, the system does run slower with lots of keywords, but it often runs un-usably slow even with just a few...sometimes even just opening it.

It's not my internet connection because I have high speed DSL.

The "journal writing" function is interesting. I didn't know about that. I can see how that would slow things down a lot.

Funny how inconsistent the performance is with different users and computers.
